According to Nivo News, the new legislation marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s internal security reforms, institutionalising police education and ensuring continuous professional development in line with global best practices.

The Act, sponsored by Senator Ahmed Abdulhamid Malam-Madori, categorises the nation’s police training network into five major groups — Police Colleges, Police Training Schools, Police Tactical Schools, Police Technical Training Schools, and other specialised institutions — all strategically located across the six geopolitical zones.

Among the newly recognised institutions are the Police Colleges in Ikeja, Kaduna, Maiduguri, and Oji River; the Police Staff College in Jos; and the Police Detective College in Enugu. Also included are several Police Training Schools in Bauchi, Minna, Sokoto, Benin, Calabar, Ibadan, Jos, Owerri, Ekiti, and others, designed to strengthen professional competence at various levels of the force.

In addition, the Act establishes elite tactical schools such as the Mobile Training Schools in Gwoza, Ila-Orangun, and Ende-Hill; the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) Schools in Nonwa-Tai and Gombe; and the Special Protection Unit (SPU) School in Kafin Hausa. Other specialised centres include the K9 Training School in Bukuru-Jos, the Marine Training School in Toru-Orua, and the Police Pre-Retirement Training School in Kudan.

The law further recognises the Police Public Relations School in Lafia and Abuja, the Police School of Intelligence in Shere, the Schools of Communication in Kudan and Ikeja, and the Police Veterinary Training School in Abuja. It also grants legal status to the Police Institute of Digital Studies and Cyber Security in Abeokuta, the Police School of Nursing and Midwifery in Ezimo, the National Institute of Police Studies in Abuja, and the Police School of Finance and Administration in Umueri, among others.

Senator Malam-Madori hailed the presidential assent as “a transformative moment in Nigeria’s internal security architecture,” noting that the legislation would professionalise police training, deepen security research, and align policing culture with international standards.

Security experts have also described the development as one of the most far-reaching legislative reforms in Nigeria’s policing history, expected to enhance professionalism, accountability, and operational efficiency within the force.

In a post shared on his official X account on Monday, Shehu reacted to reports suggesting that only a small fraction of the Nigerian Army’s 2025 budget for security equipment has been released.

He stated that although over ₦20 billion was approved for the procurement of security equipment, only about ₦1.7 billion—roughly 7 percent—has reportedly been disbursed so far.

Shehu questioned the possible impact of the funding gap on troop safety, suggesting it could be linked to growing battlefield casualties.

He also raised concerns about reported cases of soldiers abandoning their posts, implying that insufficient equipment and support may be contributing factors.

The commentator further asked what had become of funds borrowed in the name of addressing insecurity, calling for accountability in their use.
