Beer Industry Warns FG: Tax Stamp Plan Could Cripple Manufacturing Sector.

Published

The beer industry has called on the Federal Government to abandon the proposed introduction of tax stamps, warning that the plan could have severe negative consequences for the economy and the manufacturing sector.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, stakeholders in the industry expressed full support for the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN)’s appeal to the government to withdraw the tax stamp initiative, insisting that it would hinder production efficiency and worsen economic challenges.

Executive Director of the Beer Sectoral Group of MAN, Abiola Laseinde, stated that the proposed tax stamps—digital identifiers often referred to as “track and trace systems”—would be counterproductive to business operations. She explained that the initiative poses operational difficulties and financial burdens capable of destabilizing the fragile recovery currently being experienced in the manufacturing industry.

Laseinde emphasized that the tax stamp system has proven largely inefficient in other markets, often resulting in production slowdowns, supply chain disruptions, product shortages, and increased compliance costs. She noted that introducing the system at a time when manufacturers are already contending with surging excise duties, foreign exchange volatility, and high inflation would be detrimental to business survival.

She further argued that tax stamps, often justified as tools to curb illicit trade, would add no real value to the beer sector, as there is virtually no illegal production or counterfeiting within the industry. According to her, the brewing process is too complex, the products too bulky, and resale value too low to attract counterfeiters.

The beer industry also highlighted that it already operates under stringent regulatory supervision, with measures such as on-site Customs officers, digital counters, and fully auditable records ensuring compliance.

It noted that the Federal Government has already made significant investments in digital excise monitoring through platforms like the Nigeria Customs Service’s B’Odogwu Automated Excise Reporting System (ERS), which tracks production volumes and revenue in real time while improving transparency and reducing inefficiencies.

Laseinde urged the government to reconsider its approach, recommending instead that existing home-grown systems like the ERS and the Federal Inland Revenue Service’s e-Invoicing platform be strengthened and expanded. She warned that introducing tax stamps would only disrupt production, threaten jobs, and erode revenue gains achieved through current digital solutions.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday inaugurated the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), declaring that the ruling party was united and prepared to renew its commitment to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 presidential election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The inauguration took place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, where Tinubu urged members of the council and party leaders to demonstrate unity, dedication and discipline as preparations for the election gather momentum, while ensuring that governance remains a priority.

The President expressed confidence in the campaign council and the APC’s ability to work together to achieve its objectives. He emphasised that a shared vision and collective commitment would be crucial to the party’s efforts.

Addressing the gathering, Tinubu thanked party members for their contributions during the last election but warned that their work would not be complete until they secured victory in the next polls.

“As I stand before you with a heart full of gratitude and spirit full of resolve, it is my honour to inaugurate the presidential campaign council of the All Progressives Congress for the 2027 General Election. I thank all of you for the last election, but no one gets credit for an incomplete assignment until you deliver the next election, until you deliver your electoral wards, until you deliver the votes,” he said.

Tinubu also acknowledged the counsel of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, advising him not to allow the demands of campaigning to interfere with his presidential responsibilities.

Uzodimma assured the President that APC governors and other party leaders would work to communicate the administration’s message effectively to Nigerians.

Responding, Tinubu said the advice was well-timed, stressing that although the campaign council would intensify political mobilisation across the country, his administration would remain focused on fulfilling its promises and addressing citizens’ concerns.

“However, I will still make time to speak directly with Nigerians even as you lead the campaign in the states and local government areas. We have bills to pay. The American creditors cannot wait. We want those investors to come in and invest for the future of our children,” the President said.

He urged campaign council members to engage Nigerians responsibly, communicate constructively and explain the policies and programmes being implemented under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Tinubu also praised Vice President Kashim Shettima for what he described as an excellent speech, commending his eloquence and patriotic commitment to national development.

The President further acknowledged the contributions of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, to his achievements during his time as governor of Lagos. He particularly highlighted efforts to address the encroachment of the Atlantic Ocean along the coastline.

“There is a limit, but there is no limit in daring. We dared the Atlantic Ocean, and the result is the Atlantic City in Lagos,” he said.

Shettima Defends Tinubu’s Leadership

Earlier, Vice President Shettima praised Tinubu’s courage and commitment to strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

He recalled the President’s support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in 2007, when Tinubu backed Atiku’s bid for the presidency on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Shettima criticised Atiku for what he described as an attempt to diminish the dignity of the presidential office.

“You can call him Bola, if you like, call him Adekunle, but he is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the Vice President said.

He also criticised Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Movement, accusing him of using misleading statistics and comparing Nigeria with other countries without providing adequate context.

APC Chairman Charges Council To Promote Tinubu’s Record

In his remarks, APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda said the inauguration reflected the party’s collective commitment to building a better Nigeria.

He pointed to the presence of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as evidence of support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Yilwatda urged the campaign council to communicate the President’s policies and achievements clearly, saying the administration had recorded progress over the past three years.

He assured Tinubu that the council would mobilise voters across wards, local government areas and states to support the President in 2027.

According to him, the campaign would focus on explaining how government investments and reforms could translate into tangible improvements in Nigerians’ daily lives.

He also called for an election centred on ideas, performance records and policies, urging political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect the electorate.

Uzodimma Praises Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

Governor Uzodimma, who also serves as secretary of the presidential campaign council, assured Tinubu that the administration’s policies would help the council deliver its campaign message.

He praised the President for confronting economic challenges that he said previous administrations had failed to address, particularly the petrol subsidy regime and the multiple exchange-rate system.

Uzodimma argued that the previous arrangements had become unsustainable and commended Tinubu for taking action at the beginning of his administration despite the potential political consequences.

He also praised the administration’s tax reforms and other economic measures, noting that Nigeria’s economic growth had risen to 4.43 per cent from 4.23 per cent a year earlier.

While acknowledging that the reforms had caused hardship and inconvenience for some Nigerians, the governor said economic indicators suggested that the country was moving in the right direction.

Governors, Wike Pledge Support For Re-election

During goodwill messages, Governor Adeleke, Governor Soludo and FCT Minister Wike expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

Adeleke drew cheers from attendees with his familiar dance moves during the event.

Wike said he was backing Tinubu because he believed the President had demonstrated the determination to confront the country’s longstanding challenges.

“Previous administrations identified our problems, but did not tackle them. You have not shied away from tackling such problems. You tackled them from Day One,” the minister said.

He also urged governors to ensure victory for Tinubu in their respective states.

Other speakers, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs Ibrahim Kabiru Masari, and elder statesman Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, called on Nigerians to support the President’s bid for a second term.

They said a renewed mandate would allow the administration to continue implementing its reform agenda and build on the progress it says has been achieved so far.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has been handed a four-match suspension after being found guilty of pulling an opponent’s hair and aggressively confronting the referee during his team’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The 26-year-old Brazilian winger was sent off in the 73rd minute of Saturday’s encounter after grabbing and pulling the hair of Villarreal player Nathan Saliba while the two were running down the pitch.

Vinicius had earlier found the back of the net, but his goal was disallowed.

The Spanish football federation’s disciplinary committee announced the suspension shortly before Real Madrid’s Champions League fixture against Roma on Wednesday.

According to the committee, the Brazilian received a two-match ban for the hair-pulling incident, while an additional two-match suspension was imposed over his conduct towards the referee following his dismissal.

In his match report, referee Isidro Díaz de Mera stated that Vinicius protested the red card by raising his voice and approaching him aggressively. The official also noted that the forward had to be restrained by his teammates.

The punishment means Vinicius will miss several important domestic fixtures, including Real Madrid’s home clash against Sevilla on Sunday and the highly anticipated El Clasico against Barcelona the following week.

He will also be unavailable for the club’s away matches against Racing Santander and Valencia.

Vinicius’ absence from the Barcelona showdown represents a significant setback for Real Madrid, given his importance to the team’s attacking strength.

The four-game suspension leaves the Spanish giants without one of their leading forwards during a crucial stage of their domestic campaign.

The Tinubu Must Stay Movement (TMS) has appointed Marcel Ngogbehei as Director-General of its alliance with the Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration (DMI), citing his extensive experience in Nigeria’s public sector and the United Kingdom.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The appointment was announced by Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Convener of the Tinubu Must Stay Movement.

Abdullahi described Ngogbehei as a trusted associate whose leadership qualities and professional competence he had known for more than two decades.

“I have known Marcel for over 25 years. We have worked together, faced difficult challenges together and delivered results together. I know his character, I know his ability, and I trust him to deliver,” Abdullahi said.

He explained that the decision was based on Ngogbehei’s professional background, understanding of public institutions and ability to foster collaboration among different stakeholders.

Abdullahi recalled that they worked together at Galaxy Backbone Plc and subsequently at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), where they contributed to the development and implementation of several major technology initiatives.

Among the projects he highlighted were the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), the Government Data Center, the CBN Cashless Policy and the establishment of the bank’s Enterprise Architecture function.

According to Abdullahi, the Enterprise Architecture initiative helped the CBN achieve savings exceeding $1 million.

“These were not just technology projects. They were about making government systems work better, reducing waste, improving efficiency and building institutions that serve Nigerians,” he said.

On the political objectives of the alliance, the Tinubu Must Stay Movement questioned whether opposition parties had presented sufficiently detailed and convincing proposals for tackling Nigeria’s major challenges.

The movement argued that criticism of government policies should be accompanied by practical alternatives that Nigerians could assess.

“Nigerians are tired of promises without clear plans. If you say the government is wrong, tell the people what you will do better. How will you create jobs? How will you reduce the cost of living? How will you improve electricity, schools and hospitals? And where will the money come from?” the group stated.

However, the movement acknowledged that the Tinubu administration should also be held accountable for its performance.

“President Tinubu must be judged [by] the complexity of the problem he inherited and by what his government delivers. The opposition must also be judged by the solutions it offers. Nigerians deserve answers from both sides,” it added.

The group said its position was intended to promote informed discussions on public policies, government spending and their impact on ordinary Nigerians.

Abdullahi noted that Ngogbehei’s appointment came as the alliance continued to establish its organisational structures and define its programmes.

In his new role, Ngogbehei is expected to oversee organisational coordination, grassroots mobilisation and civic-accountability initiatives.

The alliance disclosed that its activities would include public discussions on government performance, assessments of alternative policy proposals and engagement with communities across the country.

Ngogbehei holds a degree in Computer and Electronics Engineering from Lagos State University and attended the Sloan programme at London Business School.

His professional experience includes senior technology roles at Galaxy Backbone Plc and the Central Bank of Nigeria, as well as leadership responsibilities on key projects within the United Kingdom Civil Service.

Beyond his professional career, Ngogbehei played an organisational role in the mobilisation efforts surrounding Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign.

He served as Director of Strategy at the Peter Obi Support Network before becoming Chairman of the Coalition for Peter Obi (CPO).

In those positions, he participated in nationwide grassroots mobilisation, voter-registration advocacy and the organisation of the 2022 Labour Party/CPO Leadership Summit in Abuja.

He later became Director-General of the Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration, where his activities focused on grassroots coordination, citizen participation and organisational development.
