Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, speaking at the University of Lagos’ Institute of Maritime Studies during the visit of International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General, Arsenio Domínguez, described the maritime sector as a “goldmine” capable of creating millions of jobs, fueling sustainable growth, and transforming Nigeria into a global maritime hub.

Oyetola, himself an alumnus of UNILAG, emphasized the need for Nigerian youths to seize opportunities in shipping, logistics, fisheries, shipbuilding, marine research, and offshore energy. He stressed that the country’s long-term prosperity depends on developing a new generation of skilled professionals who will drive the transition away from oil dependency.

The minister commended the collaboration between the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and UNILAG, citing recent investments in manpower development, including a new facility donated by NIMASA to the Institute of Maritime Studies. He affirmed that Nigeria’s blue economy roadmap rests on sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity, with youth empowerment as a central pillar.

The IMO chief, on a three-day official visit to Nigeria, inspected key maritime assets including the Nigerian Navy’s hydrographic research vessel, NNS Lana, as well as NIMASA’s C4i Centre and Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Apapa. He praised Nigeria’s efforts in maritime security, especially in the Gulf of Guinea, and highlighted the country’s investments in safety, research, and manpower as aligning with IMO’s global mission of secure and sustainable shipping.

At UNILAG, Domínguez engaged with students, encouraging them to pursue maritime careers while acknowledging Nigeria’s commitment to capacity-building as crucial to its rise in the global maritime community.

With the IMO visit expected to strengthen international collaboration, stakeholders agree that Nigeria’s blue economy is no longer a peripheral ambition but a central pillar of national strategy. As Oyetola put it, “Nigeria’s future lies beyond oil,” and the oceans may well power the nation’s next phase of prosperity.

    • The President took to Truth Social to claim that consumers are being “gouged” because pump prices have not fallen in line with the significant drop in oil costs.

    • This action follows intense public pressure regarding the economic impact of the Middle East conflict, specifically how Iran’s previous blockade of the Strait of Hormuz caused global oil prices to skyrocket in February.
