High Stakes in Ekiti APC: Ojo’s Ambition Threatened by Petitions and Party Wrangling
According to Nivo News, the fate of All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Kayode Ojo, now rests in the hands of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) after the Screening Committee granted him only a provisional clearance to contest the October 27 primary.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The committee, chaired by Tola Olawuyi, withheld full clearance over Ojo’s inability to secure the mandatory five nominators from each local government, referring his case to the NWC for a final verdict. While Governor Biodun Oyebanji and Omolayo Oluremi were fully cleared to vie for the ticket, Ojo’s candidacy remains in doubt.
Grassroots members of the party have raised strong objections to his participation, urging the national leadership to disqualify him, citing alleged anti-party activities, failure to revalidate membership, and lack of loyalty to the party. Petitioners also argued that his nominators were not all financially up-to-date, a condition required under the APC Constitution.
Ojo, however, denied the allegations, insisting he is a bona fide member and that his nominators are legitimate financial members of the party, though he was unable to provide certified registers to back his claim.
The committee, while acknowledging his name appears in the verified membership list, maintained that the aspirant failed to provide credible proof of his nominators’ financial standing. Given the weight of the petitions and inconsistencies surrounding his clearance, the panel recommended that the NWC determine his fate to prevent possible litigations.
Meanwhile, Oyebanji, widely endorsed across the 16 local government areas, is considered the frontrunner, while Oluremi remains in contention. Another aspirant, Olajumoke Abimbola, was disqualified earlier for not meeting nomination requirements. The outcome of the NWC’s decision will determine whether Ojo remains in the race as the party prepares for a keenly contested shadow election ahead of next year’s governorship poll.
