Hope And Skepticism Trail Tinubu’s Education Reforms As Nigeria Turns 65.
As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence anniversary, students across the country reflected on President Bola Tinubu’s education reforms, describing them as bold and promising, yet stressing the need for real impact beyond policy announcements.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to IREPORTERONLINE, students in tertiary institutions believe the reforms show intent to reposition the sector, but they also emphasized that the country’s education system remains riddled with underfunding, infrastructural decay, overcrowded classrooms, and the lingering threat of strikes.
Oluwagbemileke Oduselu, a 300-Level student of Babcock University, noted that while the reforms point in the right direction, “what matters most is seeing them work in real time — with improved funding, digital tools, and practical skills for today’s job market.”
Similarly, Oshunkeye Moyinoluwa, a 400-Level student of Obafemi Awolowo University, described the sector as “a work in progress,” stressing that though reforms such as the student loan scheme and the shift toward skills acquisition are commendable, students remain skeptical until these promises move from paper to reality.
At Auchi Polytechnic, ND2 Mass Communication student Zenab Oseni likened Nigeria’s education system to “a talented student juggling multiple responsibilities — resilient but rough around the edges,” applauding educators’ commitment despite limited resources.
For Ifeoluwa Adeyeye, a 300-Level student at Adekunle Ajasin University, the real demand is stability. “No more strikes, no more wasted years. Nigeria’s education system doesn’t need more promises; it needs consistency and trust between government, lecturers, and students,” she said, lamenting overcrowded halls and poor infrastructure.
Joseph Busayo, a 500-Level student of FUTA, said curriculum reviews and reforms “look good on paper,” but raised concerns on whether schools in underserved areas will truly benefit. He maintained cautious optimism, saying he hasn’t “lost total confidence” in the system’s revival.
At Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Raji Halimat Mopelola argued that education investment must be sustained if Nigeria is to achieve UN Sustainable Development Goal 4. She noted that celebrating independence while some universities remain on strike “speaks volumes,” adding that true independence is giving young people uninterrupted access to quality education.
Students widely acknowledged that the government has introduced policies with potential to transform the sector. However, they insisted that the reforms must be sustained, fully implemented, and backed by adequate investment if Nigeria is to compete globally and build the future its youth desire.
