Court Jails Two In Lagos Over Shocking Online Scam

A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, has convicted and sentenced two individuals, Joshua Victor David and Abdulmalik Adesanya Olayiwola, to one year imprisonment each for offences bordering on internet fraud.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The judgment, delivered by Justice Alexander Owoeye, followed their arraignment by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on separate one-count charges of impersonation.

According to details presented in court, David, in August 2025, disguised himself as one “Clara Jane” and deceived an unsuspecting victim, John Brill, through a fraudulent email account, with the intent of obtaining undue advantage. Similarly, Olayiwola was accused of impersonating a certain Kylie Dowdy on Facebook during the same period to defraud his victims. Both acts were found to contravene provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.

The two defendants pleaded guilty to the charges. Prosecution counsel, Fadeke Giwa and Ukoha Nwandu, reviewed the case facts and presented the defendants’ statements alongside mobile devices recovered from them as evidence. They urged the court to convict the duo accordingly.

In his ruling, Justice Owoeye sentenced David to one year in prison with an option of a ₦300,000 fine. The court further ordered the forfeiture of his iPhone 16 and a bank draft of ₦250,000 to the Federal Government. Olayiwola was equally sentenced to one year imprisonment, with the option of a ₦600,000 fine.

The convicts were apprehended by EFCC operatives in connection with internet fraud before being charged and subsequently convicted.

The exam, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), will run from April 16 to April 22 in multiple daily sessions.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, urged examination officials to remain highly committed and professional, noting that the success of the exercise depends largely on their dedication.

He gave the charge during a virtual final briefing for technical officers ahead of the examination, where he also praised staff, ad hoc personnel, service providers, and technical advisers for their roles in the successful conduct of the mock exam.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.

He also disclosed that biometric verification and real-time monitoring systems have been deployed to protect the integrity of the exercise.

Candidates whose biometrics cannot be verified, he added, will be rescheduled to write the exam at approved centres.

Meanwhile, a NAN correspondent monitoring proceedings at Aduvie International School, Jahi, reported that the first session scheduled for 8:30 a.m. began slightly behind schedule at about 8:40 a.m.
