Lagos-Calabar Coastal Project: Umahi Defends Progress, Slams “Mischief Makers”.
News Report....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has appealed to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) to shelve plans of an industrial action against the Dangote Group, warning that such a move would harm the country’s fragile economic recovery.
Umahi made this call on Monday while inspecting Sections I and II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in Lagos. He stressed that any disruption at this critical time would derail the steady progress Nigeria is beginning to record.
The Minister also dismissed claims by Stella Okengwu, Chief Executive Officer of Winhome, who alleged that she invested $250 million in land acquired for the coastal highway project. Umahi described her allegations as fraudulent and warned that she risks being invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if she fails to present verifiable evidence within seven days.
According to him, Okengwu must prove that she purchased the land in 2022 for ₦50 million, secured development approvals, and invested the funds she claimed. He further queried the whereabouts of the alleged diaspora-raised capital, stating that Lagos State had already revoked the land for the federal project and compensated her.
Civil society organizations that initially supported Okengwu’s protest have since withdrawn, labeling her claims misleading and unfounded.
During the inspection, Umahi, accompanied by stakeholders including Segun Sowunmi, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, senior directors of the Works Ministry, and civil society representatives, explained that the exercise was part of routine monitoring of federal projects. He praised Hitech Construction Company for its commitment, noting the firm is building Nigeria’s largest flyovers to link the two highway sections.
He dismissed negative social media reports about the project, describing them as mischief or ignorance of engineering processes. Umahi assured that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway would serve as a backbone for national development and would not be derailed by distractions.
Sowunmi, speaking after the tour, commended the project as a masterpiece and lauded President Bola Tinubu’s infrastructure vision under the Renewed Hope agenda. He urged Nigerians to put aside partisanship and support transformative projects for the nation’s future.
