Wayne Rooney Blasts Manchester United: “The Club Has Lost Its Soul”
Wayne Rooney has delivered a sharp critique of Manchester United, claiming the club has “lost its soul” and expressing doubt in manager Ruben Amorim’s ability to reverse their declining fortunes.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on the latest edition of The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC, the club’s all-time leading scorer described United as “broken” and admitted he now attends matches expecting defeat. Their recent 3-1 loss to Brentford leaves the team 14th in the Premier League, with no consecutive league wins since August 2024. Under Amorim, United have collected just 34 points from 33 league matches.
Despite the club’s struggles, the board reportedly continues to support Amorim. Rooney, however, insists major changes are necessary. “I am not seeing anything which gives me any confidence; there needs to be big changes, in my opinion,” he said. “Manager, players, whatever that is. Whatever it takes to get Manchester United back.”
The former England captain, who won five Premier League titles during his 13-year tenure at Old Trafford, suggested that some current players “don’t deserve to wear the shirt” and warned that fans are “waiting for the club to crumble.” United finished 15th last season, marking their lowest league finish in over five decades.
Amorim, who joined from Sporting Lisbon last November after winning consecutive Portuguese league titles, has struggled to replicate that success in England. Saturday’s defeat also extended United’s winless away streak to eight matches, their worst run since 2019.
Rooney pointed out that the issues extend beyond on-field performance, citing a collapse in club culture and leadership uncertainty. “There needs to be a clear message from the owners,” he said. “Whether that is the Glazers, or Sir Jim Ratcliffe, there has to be a message of where this club is going. At the moment we are all sitting there waiting for it to crumble. The culture of that football club has gone. I see it on a daily basis. I see staff losing jobs, people walking out of jobs.”
He added that he hopes the current instability does not affect his two children, who are part of the club’s academy. “What I’m seeing at that football club is not Manchester United,” Rooney concluded.
