Reigning champions Rivers Hoopers opened Phase Two of the 2025 Nigeria Basketball Premier League (NBPL) with a hard-fought 67-58 victory over Hoops & Read on Sunday. Captain Victor Koko’s leadership and the relentless effort of Victor Sunday set the tone early for the KingsMen, who closed the first quarter 17-11. Hoops & Read, last season’s beaten finalists, responded strongly in the second quarter with a 9-2 run that trimmed the deficit to just two points. However, Rivers Hoopers regained control, inspired by Buchi Nwaiwu’s dominance in the paint, to head into halftime with a 36-28 lead.

The visitors silenced the home crowd early in the third quarter with an 11-3 scoring run to level the contest at 39-39, forcing Coach Ogoh Odaudu into a timeout. “Basketball is a game of runs. They had theirs, we regrouped, and we came back stronger,” Odaudu explained after the game. His tactical switches paid off immediately as the KingsMen, powered by contributions from Mustapha Oyebanji and Michael Okiki—who finished with a team-high 13 points—mounted a decisive 13-0 surge to close the quarter at 54-44.

In the final quarter, the Hoopers maintained their composure to seal a 9-point win. Reflecting on the performance, Coach Odaudu admitted it was far from flawless. “It was scrappy. We didn’t play the way we should, but we’re happy with the win. There’s still room for improvement, especially in our defense. Stopping opponents is key; offense will always take care of itself,” he said.

In the day’s other fixture, Lagos Legends outclassed Comets with a commanding 70-46 win. Rivers Hoopers will rest on the second day of Atlantic Conference action, while Kwara Falcons face Lagos Legends and Hoops & Read battle Comets in the evening clash.
