NSC Chairman Hits Back At Amusan: Sports Kits Meet Global Standards

Published

Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), has dismissed claims by Nigeria’s track star, Tobi Amusan, that the kits provided to athletes for the ongoing World Championships in Tokyo were substandard.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Amusan, a former world champion and 100m hurdles record holder, had voiced her frustration on Snapchat, criticizing the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for what she described as poor organization and unprofessional handling of athlete preparations. She noted that while other nations’ athletes received kits neatly packed in suitcases, Nigerian athletes were given nylon bags containing minimal items. Amusan also questioned the quality of the gear and highlighted that, despite officials collecting shoe sizes, no shoes were supplied.

In response during an interview with Channels Television, Dikko affirmed that the kits, procured through sportswear company HiRacer, meet international standards. He commended the AFN for promptly securing the deal with HiRacer and suggested that the concerns largely stemmed from packaging rather than quality.

“The kits are not inferior. I thought the AFN should have been praised for quickly getting the transaction with HiRacer,” Dikko said, adding that other countries also use similar kits from the company.

He emphasized that Amusan’s complaints appeared more related to presentation than actual substance. “Probably she has an issue with the packaging, the quantity, yes. But the Athletics Federation of Nigeria has already explained that they are providing the kits in bits and pieces, so it shouldn’t really be an issue,” he stated.

Dikko further revealed that the HiRacer deal includes performance-based bonuses for Nigerian athletes and assured that the kits are on par with what athletes from other nations use.

“The athletes have been using the same kits, and those kits are comparable in quality to what any other athlete is using. That is the situation with the kits,” he concluded.
