Nepal Swears In Interim Ministers Amid Rising Public Protests
Nepal’s newly appointed interim prime minister unveiled her first cabinet on Monday as the nation moves to restore stability following deadly youth-led anti-corruption protests that toppled the previous government.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The swearing-in ceremony, held under an outdoor awning against the backdrop of the fire-damaged presidential office, saw President Ram Chandra Paudel administer the oath of office to three key ministers in a televised event.
The unrest, triggered by a social media ban and longstanding economic frustrations, began on September 8 and rapidly escalated, with parliament and other government buildings set ablaze. The two-day protests claimed at least 72 lives, while 191 individuals remain hospitalized, making it the most severe turmoil since the end of Nepal’s decade-long civil war and the abolition of the monarchy in 2008.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki, 73, a former chief justice, has been entrusted with addressing public demands for a corruption-free government ahead of the March elections. Om Prakash Aryal, a prominent lawyer recognized for his work on corruption, governance, and human rights, was appointed home minister as well as overseeing law, justice, and parliamentary affairs.
Kulman Ghising, the former director of the Nepal Electricity Authority credited with resolving the country’s longstanding power shortages, was given the energy, infrastructure, transport, and urban development portfolios. Rameshwor Khanal, a respected economist and former finance secretary, assumed the critical finance ministry, tasked with addressing unemployment, a key factor behind the protests.
Economic challenges remain significant, with a fifth of Nepal’s population aged 15-24 unemployed and GDP per capita standing at $1,447, according to World Bank data.
