INEC Must Enforce Law or Lose Credibility – Falana Warns on Premature Campaigns
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clamp down on politicians engaging in premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on a television programme, Falana condemned the growing trend as “abnormal” and stressed that offenders should be taken to court in order to test the strength of existing laws.
“The law cannot cover every situation. Lawmakers assumed they were dealing with a civilized political class. Clearly not. Now that they are openly violating the law, it has become the constitutional duty of INEC, under the Electoral Act, to establish rules and enforce them,” he stated.
He further emphasized that INEC has the constitutional authority to act decisively, insisting that some politicians must be prosecuted. “INEC is required to charge some of these individuals before the court. Let them come to court and argue, ‘My Lord, there is no provision for punishment.’”
Falana also warned that defying any court ruling on the matter would amount to contempt of court, an offence that carries a possible jail term.
