Former World Champion Hatton Dies At 46, Fans And Fighters Mourn

Hatton was found dead at his home in Hyde, northwest England. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that his death is not being treated as suspicious. A spokesperson said officers responded to a call from a member of the public at 6:45 a.m. local time and discovered the body of a 46-year-old man, adding that there are currently no indications of foul play.
Nicknamed “The Hitman,” Hatton won multiple world titles in the light-welterweight division and one at welterweight. Known for his aggressive fighting style, he was one of the most celebrated British boxers of his generation, finishing his career with 45 wins from 48 professional bouts. Hatton made his professional debut in 1997 and achieved notable victories over Kostya Tszyu and Jose Luis Castillo, though he suffered defeats to Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
Hatton’s post-retirement years included a brief return to the ring in 2012, which ended in a defeat to Ukraine’s Vyacheslav Senchenko. He later overcame personal challenges, including family disputes and a legal case with former trainer Billy Graham, to become a successful coach, mentoring Zhanat Zhakiyanov to a world bantamweight title in 2017. In 2022, he also participated in a non-scoring exhibition bout against Marco Antonio Barrera.
Throughout his life, Hatton was open about his struggles with mental health following his retirement. In July, he revealed plans to return to professional boxing for a bout against Eisa Al Dah in Dubai scheduled for December.
Tributes have poured in from the boxing community and beyond. Promoter Frank Warren described Hatton as a “modern great,” praising his talent and the inspiration he provided to a generation of boxers and fans. Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and former world champion Amir Khan also paid tribute, with Khan highlighting Hatton’s courage in facing mental health challenges.
Hatton was a devoted Manchester City fan, and the club expressed their devastation at his passing, announcing a minute’s appreciation in his honor ahead of Sunday’s derby against Manchester United. Organizers of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool also confirmed they would pay tribute to the late champion.

News reports that Atiku made the remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with members of the Coalition for Democracy Movement, led by Jibril Shehu Mustapha, where discussions focused on improving electoral integrity and strengthening nationwide political coordination.
In a post shared on his handle, Atiku emphasised the importance of putting in place strong measures to prevent electoral manipulation.
He noted that the coalition presented details of its nationwide structure and reaffirmed its support for his political engagements, particularly efforts aimed at protecting votes and ensuring a credible electoral process.
Atiku expressed appreciation for the group’s backing, commending their consistency and assuring them that their sacrifices and contributions would be remembered.
He wrote that he drew attention to increasing concerns about manipulation during elections, especially at collation centres, stressing the need for effective safeguards while thanking the coalition for its continued support.
He further assured the group that their efforts in defending democracy would not be forgotten and would be recognized in history.

He made this known during an interview on the Echo Room podcast, where he explained that his mother was already seriously ill while he was still in the Big Brother house and her condition worsened significantly by the time he was evicted.
According to him, the prize money from the show played a crucial role in funding her medical treatment. He added that if he had finished as first runner-up instead of winner, he would not have had the financial ability to support her care at that critical time.
“When I was in the house, my mom was ill. By the time I came out, my mom was close to death. I’m saying it categorically now, if I did not win that show, if I had gone and come out second, my mom would be dead now,” he said.
Laycon also spoke about how he got opportunities in the film industry after the show, explaining that most producers approached him because of his fame from BBNaija rather than any proven acting experience.
He noted that even before pursuing formal training in film or completing his university education, he was already being offered roles, but he often questioned the motivation behind such offers, suggesting they were driven more by his popularity than his talent.
He further reflected on public perceptions of his career choices across music, film, and education, saying people often speculate that his decisions are influenced by struggles in one area or another, but insisted that everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

In a viral video circulating online, Abdulfatai was seen visibly emotional and in tears as he lamented what he called injustice and betrayal within the party. Speaking in Yoruba, he expressed shock that his name was missing from the list of those who had shown interest in contesting for the legislative seat, questioning how such a decision was made despite his long-standing loyalty and contributions to the party.

Meanwhile, another APC chieftain, Ciroma Almajiri Joseph, has withdrawn from the race for the Kaduna South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections. He also declared his support for the incumbent senator, Sunday Marshall Katung.
In a statement dated April 20, 2026, Joseph said his decision followed wide consultations with his family, political associates, community leaders, and supporters across the district. He explained that the move was aimed at strengthening unity within the party and promoting political stability in Southern Kaduna, adding that his withdrawal was informed by patriotism and political maturity.
