BREAKING: Resident Doctors End Two-Day Strike, Hospitals Resume Normal Operations

NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara, confirmed the suspension in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday morning. He said, “Some of our demands have been met, and the government has assured us that remaining issues will be addressed. Strike suspended; resumption to work today. This action is a demonstration of goodwill and to ensure Nigerians continue to access healthcare in our facilities.” Dr. Osundara did not provide specifics regarding which demands had been met at the time of the statement.
During the strike, services in many public hospitals were severely disrupted, with consultants and other healthcare personnel managing increased workloads. This led to delays in patient care and created challenging conditions for health workers, who described the period as “overwhelming.”
The industrial action was prompted by unresolved welfare and funding concerns, including the immediate payment of the outstanding 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, settlement of arrears from the 25–35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) review, payment of 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, prompt disbursement of specialist allowances, and restoration of recognition for West African Postgraduate Membership Certificates by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). The association also demanded that the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria issue membership certificates to qualifying candidates, implement the 2024 CONMESS structure, resolve welfare issues affecting doctors in Kaduna State, and address challenges facing resident doctors at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.
While the strike has been suspended, NARD stated it will continue to monitor the government’s response to its demands. The association emphasized that the suspension is a gesture of goodwill but expects swift action from authorities to prevent further industrial action.
Saba Gideon, the lawmaker representing the Edu State Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly and chairman of the House Committee on Livestock, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) citing a lack of internal democracy, fairness, and inclusiveness. This defection follows a period of friction between Gideon and the state legislature, stemming from a three-month suspension imposed by the Assembly on December 18, 2025. Led by House Leader Abdulkadir Magaji and Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, the suspension accused the lawmaker of contempt and breach of legislative privilege for allegedly leaking a secret recording of a closed-door meeting. Rather than issuing a mandated written apology, Gideon challenged the suspension in court. In February 2026, the Kwara State High Court ruled in his favor, nullifying the suspension as unconstitutional and unlawful due to procedural violations and a lack of legal backing.

During the insecurity panel, he criticized highway checkpoints along major routes like Lagos-Abuja and Lokoja, alleging that officers profile well-off travelers and pass their details to criminal syndicates. He asserted that security agencies know the identities behind these violent crimes, stating, “There are no unknown gunmen anywhere. The military men are the unknown gunmen, the Immigration, the Customs, they are the unknown gunmen. Nobody else.”
Following his remarks, the police dismissed the allegations as unsubstantiated and challenged him to provide proof. VDM initially responded that he would only present his evidence if charged to court, doubling down on his claims that officers aid kidnappers. He has now posted footage showing paraded police officers, though the video lacks a detailed breakdown of how it substantiates his specific tip-off claims, leaving the core allegations subject to formal investigation.
The dispute has sparked widespread reactions both online and offline. Meanwhile, the Presidency has publicly criticized the NBA for providing a platform for what it termed reckless allegations against law enforcement.
