NCAA Breaks Silence On Air Peace Runway Scare, Clears Co-Pilot Of Blame

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has explained its decision to clear the co-pilot of Air Peace who was initially mentioned alongside colleagues accused of drug and alcohol involvement. According to Nivo News, the clarification followed concerns over the regulator’s handling of the case after an Air Peace aircraft experienced a runway excursion at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Sunday, June 13. Speaking during an X Space discussion on Saturday, Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, said the clearance was granted after due process was followed and thorough investigations were conducted. He noted that both the NCAA’s internal inquiry and the preliminary report by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) did not implicate the co-pilot.

Achimugu revealed that evidence showed the co-pilot had actually advised the captain to abort the landing and go around, a directive the captain ignored. He stressed that it would be unfair to ground a pilot for up to a year without evidence of wrongdoing.

The NSIB report disclosed that the aircraft had touched down 2,264 metres from the runway threshold, far beyond the recommended touchdown zone, before coming to a halt 209 metres into the clearway.

Achimugu further explained that aviation rules are frequently tested by real-life incidents, which is why the NCAA continuously reviews and updates its regulations. He also stated that while airlines are permitted to set internal policies and compliance mechanisms, they must still submit reports to the authority for oversight.

He emphasized that the NCAA’s procedures remain aligned with global aviation standards and include post-incident assessments carried out in NCAA-approved testing centres. Achimugu added that the Director General of the NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo, is already conducting further investigations into the matter.
