NANS Demands Urgent Government Action To Protect Dangote Refinery

Published

on

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the federal government to protect the Dangote Refinery and its associated facilities, including fuel distribution trucks, from sabotage by groups seeking to undermine the company’s positive impact on Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The student body also called for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing dispute between the refinery and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

In a statement issued by Usman Adamu Nagwaza, President of the NANS Senate, the association expressed concern over the potential economic consequences if the feud escalates.

“The leadership of NANS has been closely monitoring the ongoing dispute between Dangote Refinery and NUPENG. While we acknowledge the critical role of unions in protecting workers’ rights, membership must remain a matter of free choice. No individual or group should be coerced, and the decision not to join should never trigger threats of national disruption,” the statement said.

NANS emphasized that it has no objection to NUPENG’s activities but warned that unresolved conflicts could lead to fuel scarcity, with severe repercussions for the economy. The association praised the federal government’s efforts under President Bola Tinubu’s administration to stabilize fuel supply and revive the economy, noting that any disruption would undermine these gains.

Citing credible security intelligence, NANS warned that elements linked to oil cartels—known for promoting fuel scarcity and exploiting subsidy schemes—may attempt to sabotage the refinery’s newly acquired Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel trucks. The statement urged NUPENG to pursue dialogue and avoid actions that could be manipulated by economic saboteurs.

NANS also called on the National Security Adviser and the nation’s security agencies to take urgent measures to protect these critical national assets, describing any attack on the refinery as an attack on Nigeria’s future.

“The Dangote Refinery has become a key source of employment and a hub for knowledge transfer for Nigerian graduates. The Federal Government must act decisively to safeguard it and prevent any risk of fuel scarcity, ensuring continued economic growth and stable fuel distribution for Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
