Bank Customers Cry Foul Over Repeated Charges, Demand CBN And BCAN Action
Nigerian bank customers have voiced growing frustration over what they describe as unauthorised and excessive deductions from their accounts, urging the Bank Customers Association of Nigeria (BCAN) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to intervene and safeguard their rights.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Several customers in Abuja told reporters on Sunday that the repeated charges were not only unnecessary but increasingly burdensome amid the country’s economic challenges. Mrs. Helen Agodo, a First HoldCo Plc account holder, revealed that she had been receiving multiple debit alerts daily.
“In fact, I do not blame some people for keeping their money outside banks. On one day alone, the total debit alert charges I received amounted to ₦1,000,” she said, adding that if such deductions were applied to thousands of customers, the total revenue for banks would be substantial. Agodo appealed to BCAN to engage the CBN and other regulatory bodies to halt the unauthorised deductions.
Cheta Ugochukwu, a customer of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, described the charges as “unfair and insincere.” She said, “I conduct all my transactions electronically, which I assumed aligns with the CBN’s cashless policy. Yet, I was charged ₦1,146 for SMS alerts in one month, in addition to ₦100 for an electronic money transfer levy, despite regulations stipulating ₦50.” She urged BCAN to raise public awareness and actively engage customers nationwide.
Usman Idris, a Fidelity Bank customer, claimed over ₦3,700 was deducted from his current account as maintenance fees without prior notification. “When I sought clarification, I was asked to submit an official letter. It was shocking because the bank did not seek my permission when debiting my account,” Idris lamented.
In response, a bank official, who requested anonymity, defended the charges, stating they were in accordance with CBN guidelines. BCAN, under the leadership of President Uju Ogubunka, has reportedly written to the CBN regarding the matter. The association, a non-profit advocating for customer rights, serves as a collective voice for both individual and corporate account holders. BCAN has pledged to intensify efforts to curb exploitative charges and promote transparency in Nigeria’s banking sector.
