According to Nivo News, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on supporters of jailed separatist agitator Simon Ekpa to renounce violence and embrace peace in the interest of the Southeast and Nigeria as a whole.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The group commended the Federal Government for its ongoing efforts to address insecurity in the region and welcomed the conviction of Ekpa in Finland, describing the six-year sentence as a decisive step toward restoring stability.

In a statement jointly signed by its factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesperson, Chief Thompson Ohia, Ohanaeze hailed the contributions of National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of State for Defence Dr. Bello Matawalle, and Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, noting their roles in curbing the devastating Monday sit-at-home protests and broader security threats.

The organization stated that the Finnish court’s ruling against Ekpa underscored the global recognition of the dangers posed by his activities. It reiterated that the people of the Southeast reject armed struggle and terrorism in the name of Biafra agitation, emphasizing nonviolence as the only acceptable path to self-determination.

Ohanaeze also urged the Federal Government to engage peaceful and repentant pro-Biafra agitators who are willing to contribute to peacebuilding efforts. Citing the success of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s “Carrot and Stick” approach, which ended militancy in the Niger Delta in 2008, the group advocated rehabilitation and empowerment programs to reintegrate misguided youths and entrepreneurs into society.

The organization further appealed to Ekpa’s followers to abandon the concealment of violence in the region and accept opportunities for rehabilitation. It described Ekpa’s imprisonment as a turning point for the Southeast and praised security chiefs for dismantling what it called “a reign of terror” that had disrupted economic and social life.

While acknowledging that some Igbo political leaders may not publicly express approval of Ekpa’s sentence, Ohanaeze maintained that there is broad private support for decisive action against insecurity.

Deregistration Drama: Courtroom Showdown Over ADC And Accord Party Hits A New Delay!.

Published

on

  • Case Adjournment: The Court of Appeal in Abuja has postponed the hearing of an appeal regarding the potential deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, and three other political parties until July 7.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

    • Procedural Delay: The court moved the hearing date from June 25 to allow the involved parties sufficient time to file and exchange their briefs of argument.

    • Reasoning for New Date: Although Accord Party counsel, Musibau Adetunbi (SAN), requested a three-day window to file, Justice Abubakar Mohammed explained that the panel’s upcoming official commitments necessitated selecting July 7 as the earliest available date.

    • Background of the Dispute: The appeal follows a Federal High Court ruling by Justice Peter Lifu, which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the ADC, Accord Party, Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for allegedly failing to meet constitutional performance benchmarks.

    • INEC’s Position: INEC has challenged this deregistration order, arguing that these parties met the necessary constitutional thresholds by securing elective positions in previous elections and providing certificates of return as evidence.

    • Stay of Execution: On June 16, the Court of Appeal previously ordered a stay of execution on the Federal High Court’s judgment, preventing INEC from proceeding with the deregistration until the current appeal is decided.

    • Procedural Criticism: The appellate court had previously criticized Justice Lifu for ignoring an earlier order to suspend proceedings, noting that such an action undermined the established hierarchy of the courts.

    • Origin of the Suit: The original legal challenge was filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, who argued that these specific parties failed to meet the electoral performance standards required by the 1999 Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act.
