Outrage In Enugu As Man Kidnapped Over Mere N7,000; Family, Rights Groups Demand Immediate Action

The family of Alfred Eme, alongside the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), has demanded his immediate release following his alleged abduction and prolonged detention by a police unit from Enugu State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Executive Director of RULAAC, Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, accused the police of abusing their authority by fabricating charges against citizens. Speaking at a press conference in Enugu on Monday, Nwanguma condemned “abduction-style arrests” as a growing tactic used by law enforcement to extort and intimidate the public.

Eme’s brother, Sunday, alleged that police officers from both Lagos and Enugu State Commands extorted money from the family in varying amounts. He further claimed that officers forced Alfred Eme to sign a statement, drafted by a senior police official, admitting to financing the Indigenous People of Biafra—a charge he denies. Eme maintains that the only money he sent, approximately N7,000, was payment to a carpenter.

Nwanguma criticized the Enugu police for traveling to Lagos to detain Eme and then denying his family and legal counsel access to him. “He was held incommunicado for over a month before being charged with baseless offenses,” he said.

According to RULAAC, the ordeal began on June 26, 2025, when armed operatives from the Enugu State Anti-Kidnapping Unit raided Eme’s Lagos residence and arrested him in front of his wife, without a warrant. Nwanguma described the authorities’ refusal to disclose his whereabouts as “an enforced disappearance” and a severe violation of constitutional rights. He added that Eme was secretly held in Enugu for over a month, denied any contact with his family or a lawyer, emphasizing that “the use of trumped-up charges remains one of the most insidious tactics in Nigeria’s law enforcement culture.”
