A passenger train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, causing several carriages to overturn and triggering panic among passengers. The incident occurred around 11:09 a.m. at kilometer 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Eyewitnesses described the derailment as sudden, creating confusion as passengers scrambled to escape the affected cabins. Six passengers were reported injured. “It was complete pandemonium. People were running in all directions. It was sheer panic,” said one eyewitness, who identified himself as Abubakar.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed that six passengers sustained injuries, with no fatalities recorded. Investigators have been deployed to the site to gather evidence and determine the cause of the accident. NSIB Director-General Capt. Alex Badeh expressed sympathy for those injured and emphasized the bureau’s commitment to ensuring safer rail transport through an independent investigation.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) also confirmed the derailment, stating that emergency services were promptly activated. “Emergency rescue teams, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals have been mobilized. Security personnel are on site as efforts continue to return all passengers safely to Abuja,” the NRC said.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani extended condolences to the victims and instructed immediate rescue operations. The incident is under joint investigation by federal railway authorities, security agencies, and emergency responders to establish whether technical failure, poor maintenance, or sabotage caused the derailment. Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani criticized authorities, citing ongoing passenger complaints about security and safety along the corridor.

The Abuja-Kaduna rail line has faced repeated disruptions, including a terrorist attack in March 2022 that left multiple people dead and others abducted. Tuesday’s derailment has reignited concerns among residents and commuters who rely on the train as a safer alternative to the expressway.

President Bola Tinubu, who is currently in Brazil, expressed sadness over the incident and offered prayers for the injured. He confirmed that he is closely monitoring developments and awaiting a full briefing to ensure swift action and support for those affected.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that seven passengers were injured, receiving first aid at the scene before being transferred to hospitals. NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, led the agency’s rescue team to the site, coordinating a multi-agency operation involving the military, police, immigration service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. NEMA stated that further updates on the cause of the accident will be provided by investigators from the Ministry of Transportation.
