“I Will Never Search Myself Online” – Chimamanda Reveals Bold Stance
Award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has revealed that she has deliberately avoided reading or searching for information about herself online since 2005. According to Chimamanda, searching for information about oneself exposes individuals to “faceless ghosts” whose comments can distort reality and negatively impact mental well-being. She noted that such negativity can stifle creativity, citing the tragic cases of celebrities who have taken their own lives after being affected by harmful online write-ups.
The author emphasized that avoiding online scrutiny has allowed her to remain focused and freely pursue her work. “Since 2005, I have never read or searched about myself, and I never will, because it is important to protect yourself from the terrible part of the internet,” Chimamanda said. She further explained that constant attention to online commentary can be mentally destructive and prevent one from becoming the person they are meant to be.
Chimamanda described her approach as a “wonderful ignorance” that shields her from online toxicity, enabling her to create without distraction. She concluded that the practice of avoiding online searches about oneself is essential for mental health and personal growth.
