From Nigeria To Saudi Arabia: NDLEA Unravels Cross-Border Drug Ring

Published

on

According to Nivo News, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 55-year-old alleged drug kingpin, Mohammed Ali Abubakar, also known as Bello Karama, along with five members of his syndicate operating at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano State. The arrests followed investigations linking the group to illicit drug shipments that led to the detention of three unsuspecting Nigerian pilgrims in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on allegations of trafficking narcotics.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The NDLEA disclosed this development during a press briefing at its national headquarters in Abuja on Monday, August 25, 2025. The briefing was jointly addressed by the Agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi; Director of Assets and Financial Investigation, Dr. Abdul Ibrahim; and Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, Theresa Asuquo.

The Agency explained that it launched an investigation after its Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), received petitions from the families of three Nigerians detained in Saudi Arabia after performing the lesser hajj. The detainees—Mrs. Maryam Hussain Abdullahi, Mrs. Abdullahi Bahijja Aminu, and Mr. Abdulhamid Saddiq—had traveled on Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET940 from Kano to Jeddah via Addis Ababa on August 6, 2025. NDLEA findings revealed that six additional bags, three of which contained illicit substances, were secretly tagged to their names without their knowledge.

The Agency’s investigation traced the bags to Ali Abubakar Mohammed, identified as the syndicate leader, who allegedly coordinated the operation with the help of staff members of the Skyway Aviation Handling Company. While the three innocent pilgrims boarded Ethiopian Airlines, Abubakar himself traveled to Jeddah on Egypt Air after arranging for the bags to be checked in under their names.

NDLEA confirmed that six suspects, including Abubakar, are now in custody, with four already charged to court. Confessional statements revealed that Abubakar brought in seven pieces of luggage, while accomplices Celestina Emmanuel Yayock and Jazuli Kabir admitted checking in bags for fees of ₦100,000 each, with payment records linking the transactions directly to the syndicate leader.

The Agency stated it is working closely with Saudi authorities through the General Directorate of Narcotics Control (GDNC) to ensure that the three innocent Nigerians are cleared of wrongdoing. Brig. Gen. Marwa is expected to present the Agency’s findings at an international drug conference attended by Saudi officials and has expressed readiness to personally visit the Kingdom to secure justice for the detainees.

NDLEA reiterated that while it will continue to pursue high-profile drug traffickers without compromise, it will not allow innocent citizens to suffer unjustly. The Agency also commended the Ministry of Aviation, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Aviation Security (AVSEC), and the Department of State Services (DSS) for their collaboration and for approving interim measures at MAKIA to prevent future incidents of this kind.

The Ute Okpu Kingdom in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State has suspended the burial of late Dr Chamberlain Nnamdi Dunkwu pending the outcome of an independent autopsy to determine the actual cause of his death.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Dr Dunkwu, who served until March 7, 2026, as Deputy Chief of Staff (Legislative) to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has been at the centre of growing concerns within his community over the circumstances surrounding his passing.

The community dismissed reports suggesting that burial arrangements had already been concluded, describing them as false and misleading amid rising suspicions about how he died.

This position was contained in a joint statement issued by the Obi of Ute Okpu Kingdom, the Elders-in-Council, traditional chiefs, youth groups, the Uwizimas, and members of the Dunkwu family led by Chief Augustine Dunkwu.

Community leaders called on relevant authorities, including the Nigeria Police, the Ministry of Health, and other government agencies, to urgently ensure an independent medical examination is carried out.

They emphasised that no burial date has been fixed, stressing that burial will remain on hold until a full autopsy is completed to establish the true cause of death.

According to the statement, the decision was based on cultural, legal, and emotional considerations, noting that the circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear and require proper investigation.

The community also argued that an autopsy is necessary to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future, insisting that any wrongdoing must not go unaddressed.

Citing traditional beliefs, they maintained that their customs do not permit the burial of any person whose death is surrounded by doubt, stating that truth must precede burial rites.

On legal grounds, the statement referenced standard procedures for sudden or unexplained deaths, calling for compliance with relevant coroner laws and medical protocols that require autopsy in such cases.

The community reaffirmed its willingness to cooperate fully with investigative authorities, stressing that it is not opposing burial but insisting on due process and clarity.

They further stated that once the autopsy is concluded and findings are released, a proper and dignified burial would be conducted.

The statement ended with a unified stance from all stakeholders in Ute Okpu Kingdom: “In the interest of justice, tradition, and the safety of our people, we stand united: No autopsy, no burial.”
