“Enemy Within”: Joke Lawal’s Hard-Hitting Film On Abuse And Survival
According to Nivo News, Nollywood actress and producer Joke Lawal has returned with a daring new project aimed at tackling one of society’s most urgent challenges — domestic violence. Her latest film, Enemy Within, is a gripping crime thriller exploring themes of marital abuse, friendship, loyalty, and betrayal.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an exclusive interview, Lawal revealed that although she has neither been married nor personally experienced domestic abuse, she felt a strong responsibility to spotlight the issue due to its growing prevalence. “No personal reason though — I have never been married,” she said. “But it is what is going on in our society, and what I have seen around.”
Lawal described the production of Enemy Within as demanding, citing funding, casting, and location sourcing as major hurdles. “The first challenge is getting the right cast for the job, locations and funds,” she explained with a laugh. “Everything is expensive now.” She expressed deep appreciation to her cast and crew for their dedication, flexibility, and willingness to bring the project to life. “All the actors I used on this set were all good people with a great heart,” she said. “I really appreciate their consideration and support to put this masterpiece together.”
Speaking about her experience in the Yoruba Nollywood sector, Lawal noted concerns over the daily payment structure for actors in YouTube-based productions, calling for greater consideration in how performers are compensated. “Paying actors per day for a YouTube film is something we really need to work on in this sector,” she observed. “I will not like to mention names and I’m not saying it’s bad, but we should be considerate.”
Enemy Within marks Lawal’s third production, following Honeymoon in 2018 and Omowonuola in 2021. With each film, she has steadily built a reputation for telling socially relevant stories that reflect the struggles, joys, and contradictions of everyday life. As Nollywood continues to evolve, Lawal’s commitment to meaningful storytelling sets her apart as a filmmaker using cinema not only as entertainment but also as a mirror to society.
