Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has praised the “spirit of unity and foresight” demonstrated following the integration of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) structure in Kaduna State into the African Democratic Congress (ADC). A statement released on Sunday by the coalition’s Publicity Secretary, Darius Kurah, noted that the meeting, chaired by El-Rufai, brought together influential stakeholders and political leaders from across party lines.

In his remarks, El-Rufai described the decision as a bold step toward creating a formidable political front ahead of future elections.

“I must commend the courage, wisdom, and foresight shown here today. What we are witnessing is not merely an alliance of party structures but a unity of purpose,” the former governor said.

He further emphasized that Kaduna State could only achieve inclusive development when leaders prioritized collective interests over personal ambitions.

“The spirit of unity that has brought us here today is what will sustain us tomorrow. Politics should not be about division but about serving the people collectively. We must continue to strengthen this coalition and offer the people of Kaduna State a credible, people-centered, and truly progressive alternative,” El-Rufai added.

ADC Leaders Welcome Defectors

ADC Vice Chairman (North West), Ja’afar Mohammed Sani, commended the SDP leadership for “putting the people first” by joining a broader political platform.

“This marks a new chapter in Kaduna politics. The courage of the SDP leadership to align with the ADC demonstrates vision and a commitment to providing credible alternatives. We are not gathering merely for politics, but to restore hope and confidence in governance,” he said.

Similarly, ADC State Chairman Elder Patrick Ambut assured the defectors of full integration into the party’s structures.

“This is not about old or new members. From today, we are one family with a shared destiny. Everyone will have a role as we prepare for the challenges ahead,” he stated.

ADC Kaduna leader Mallam Bashir Saidu highlighted that the coalition represents more than a merger of party structures.

“This is a convergence of ideologies committed to service, transparency, and development. We are building a platform that reflects the true aspirations of the people,” he said.

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the establishment of a Membership Registration Committee by the ADC National Working Committee. According to the statement, the committee will collaborate with state, local government, and ward structures to commence fresh membership registration and revalidation throughout Kaduna State.

Kurah explained that the exercise aims to strengthen the ADC’s grassroots base and enhance organizational readiness ahead of upcoming elections.

“The revalidation exercise will not only consolidate the merger but also position the ADC as a strong, united, and people-driven party in Kaduna State,” the statement concluded.

The festivities, which began after 2 p.m. at the Emirates Stadium, wound through Highbury, Canonbury, and Upper Street before concluding back at the stadium. This parade honored a league victory confirmed on May 19, ending a 22-year championship drought. During the event, fans were seen climbing trees and rooftops to see Mikel Arteta’s squad as the players showcased the Premier League trophy. The procession included four buses, one of which carried the Arsenal Women’s team, winners of the inaugural Women’s Champions Cup this past February.

This celebration followed a heartbreaking 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday, where Arsenal ultimately fell in a penalty shootout after misses by Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes. Despite the European defeat, the Premier League title held immense significance for the team, coming after three consecutive seasons as runners-up. Reflecting on the massive turnout, journalist Matt Graveling described the celebration as the largest sporting event he had witnessed in his 15-year career.
