Alaafin Sparks Tension: Supreme Court Ruling Set For Public Reveal In 48 Hours

Published

on

Amid a deepening royal dispute, the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, is reportedly preparing to release a Supreme Court judgment said to affirm his exclusive authority to confer chieftaincy titles across Yorubaland. The move follows the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum issued to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, over the conferment of the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title on businessman Dotun Sanusi.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Insiders disclosed that the Alaafin met with senior palace chiefs in Oyo on Wednesday to deliberate on next steps. The monarch’s media aide, Bode Durojaiye, had earlier demanded that the Ooni withdraw the title, citing a Supreme Court ruling as the basis of the Alaafin’s position. He accused the Ooni of exceeding his jurisdiction, arguing that his authority is limited to the territory historically corresponding to the former Oranmiyan Local Government Area.

Prominent Yoruba figures, including Aare Ona Kakanfo Iba Gani Adams, Ifa scholar Professor Wande Abimbola, and the Yoruba Council of Elders, have appealed for calm and offered to mediate. The Yoruba Council Worldwide described the clash as a sensitive matter requiring reflection and unity, urging both palaces to de-escalate tensions and retract inflammatory statements.

In an open letter, Babajide Agunbiade, the Atóbaáse of Yorubaland, reaffirmed the Alaafin’s historical and political supremacy, tracing his authority to the Oyo Empire and citing judicial precedents to support his claim. He urged the monarch to consider legal action to reassert his authority, while acknowledging the Ooni’s spiritual significance as custodian of Yoruba heritage.

However, legal practitioner Pelumi Olajengbesi challenged the assertion of exclusive pan-Yoruba authority, insisting that no Supreme Court judgment or statute grants such power to the Alaafin. He argued that the Ooni acted within his traditional and legal rights, noting that Ile-Ife remains universally recognized as the cradle of Yoruba civilization.

Traditional leaders in Osun and Oyo States have begun behind-the-scenes mediation, while cultural associations have condemned attempts to distort Yoruba history. Analysts warn that social media commentary has amplified tensions, with elders calling on youths to exercise restraint. Many observers believe the situation could set an important precedent for the balance of authority among prominent Yoruba monarchs.

Residents of Umunenweze village within the Okaiuga Nkwoegwu autonomous community in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia State, have called on the state government for urgent intervention to halt ongoing land grabbing activities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Protest and Allegations of Illegal Sales

During a peaceful protest at the disputed Okpuijikara land, community members warned that the situation threatens imminent violence and widespread hunger. Speaking on behalf of the village, the spokesperson, Onyekachi Igbojionu, alleged that a few individuals secretly allocated ancestral farmlands—reserved for farming and future housing—to private estate developers without the community’s consent.

Igbojionu noted that these actions persist in defiance of an existing court order issued by Justice A.U. Kalu of the Abia State High Court, Umuahia, under suit number HU/163/2022. Furthermore, residents expressed deep concern that local school lands have also been targeted for unauthorized distribution.

Appeal to Governor Alex Otti

The community appealed directly to Governor Alex Otti to intervene and prevent bloodshed, emphasizing their commitment to using legal, peaceful, and judicial means to protect their heritage. Echoing these concerns, Mrs. Janeth Nwagboso stated that women are now too fearful to farm on the land, worsening local unemployment and hunger.

It is noteworthy that the Abia State government previously acknowledged receiving petitions regarding the land dispute on June 3, 2026, pledging to pursue an amicable resolution.
