Under Fire, Governor Alia Bows To Lawmakers, Suspends 3 Key Officers
According to Nivo News, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has endorsed the resolution of the State House of Assembly to suspend three senior government officials for one month. Governor Alia affirmed the suspension of the Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri; the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Mrs. Grace Adagba; and the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Lottery Commission, Michael Uper. All three are to step aside for a period of one month.
In the statement, Governor Alia reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law, due process, and the principles of separation of powers. He commended the State House of Assembly for carrying out its constitutional mandate and assured Benue residents that his government remains focused on transparency, accountability, and good governance. He also urged the affected institutions to ensure uninterrupted service delivery during the suspension period while appealing to the people of Benue State to continue supporting his administration’s reform agenda.
This development comes against the backdrop of growing tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government in Benue State. Lawmakers had earlier accused Governor Alia of failing to address critical issues raised by the Assembly. During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh, the legislators resolved not to entertain further requests from the Governor until their concerns were met. The Assembly also rejected his recent request to screen and confirm new commissioner nominees, vowing to suspend all executive proposals pending the resolution of their grievances.
