Colombian Court Frees Ex-President As Appeal Battle Unfolds
A Colombian court on Tuesday ordered the immediate release of former president Álvaro Uribe as he challenges his conviction for witness tampering, a case that resulted in a 12-year house arrest sentence earlier this month. The ruling, delivered by the Superior Court in Bogotá, allows the 73-year-old to remain free while his appeal is under review, with judges noting they do not consider him a flight risk.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Uribe, who governed Colombia from 2002 to 2010 and dominated national politics for nearly two decades, was found guilty of pressuring right-wing paramilitaries to provide false testimony about their alleged links to him during a period of atrocities against leftist rebels. The conviction marked the first time in the country’s history that a former president has been sentenced for a crime, and prosecutors had secured the maximum penalty available.
The former leader has rejected the verdict as politically driven, blaming Colombia’s left-leaning government, led by President Gustavo Petro, for using the justice system against him. The court must decide by October 16 whether to uphold or overturn the ruling; if it fails to meet that deadline, the trial will be annulled.
In a message on social media, Uribe thanked supporters and vowed to devote his freedom “to the freedom of Colombia.” A staunch law-and-order conservative and longtime U.S. ally, Uribe remains a towering figure among Colombian conservatives and continues to wield influence over party leadership.
The case, which began in 2018, involved testimony from more than 90 witnesses and was revived under Attorney General Luz Camargo, an appointee of Petro and one of Uribe’s fiercest political opponents. Prosecutors presented evidence that at least one former paramilitary fighter was approached to alter his account of past crimes.
The proceedings have sparked sharp political reactions both in Colombia and abroad. U.S. officials, including Senator Marco Rubio, have criticized the prosecution as judicial overreach, while President Petro publicly questioned foreign interference and described the pressure on Colombian courts as “enormous.” Recent opinion polls still rank Uribe as one of the country’s most popular politicians, highlighting his enduring influence despite the historic conviction.
