Auchi Tragedy: Dangote Cement Truck Cleared Of Blame In Fatal Crash
The Coalition of Edo Civil Society Organisations (CECSO) has cleared Dangote Cement of any responsibility in the recent fatal accident along the Auchi-Okpella-Okene road near Omega Fire Ministry in Auchi, Etsako West LGA, Edo State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The tragedy, which claimed three lives, occurred when a Dangote Cement truck was reportedly involved in a collision. The incident reignited public concerns over the frequent movement of cement trucks through the town.
The accident follows another recent tragedy in Auchi involving Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Phyna, who was severely injured by a Dangote Cement truck just six days after graduating from Auchi Polytechnic. Otabor lost one leg to amputation, and doctors fear she may lose the other.
In a statement issued Tuesday, CECSO president Comrade James Osahon emphasized that contrary to online reports, Dangote Cement’s truck was not at fault. Independent investigations by the coalition, corroborated by the Edo State Police Command, confirmed that the accident was caused by a third-party cement truck that lost control, striking other vehicles before colliding with the Dangote truck.
CECSO described attempts to blame Dangote as “malicious and mischievous,” arguing that spreading misinformation dishonors the victims and undermines efforts to hold the actual culprits accountable. “After thorough on-the-ground investigations, including visits to the accident scene and consultations with security personnel, it is clear that a third-party truck, not the Dangote vehicle, caused the chain of events,” the coalition stated.
Authorities confirmed that three vehicles were involved in the crash: two trucks and a Mercedes-Benz GLK, with all occupants of the GLK later pronounced dead. The Dangote truck, which caught fire, was brought under control, further supporting the coalition’s findings.
Osahon condemned what he called a “smear campaign” against Dangote Cement, attributing it to groups uncomfortable with the company’s safer and cleaner CNG trucks now in use. He stressed that misinformation only fuels public anger and distracts from systemic road safety issues.
CECSO extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged government agencies to implement stricter road safety measures, including enhanced regulation of haulage vehicles to prevent accidents caused by brake failures and poor maintenance.
