Asante was a prominent frontline journalist during the civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone, having been among the first reporters to break news of the Liberian civil war in 1990. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, he provided extensive commentary on politics and social development across Africa.
Together with his colleague, esteemed journalist Lindsay Barrett, Asante was recognised for his bravery, often risking his life to report from conflict zones. Their frontline coverage became highly valued by the global press.
Born in Keta in 1949, Asante’s formative years were influenced by his involvement in the Ghana Young Pioneer Movement, inspired by the ideals of Kwame Nkrumah. He credited Nkrumah’s passionate personality and exceptional oratory for inspiring young men like him to engage in activism.
Asante also championed the voice of African youth on issues such as the environment and population. He organised seminars and workshops locally and regionally, attended key Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summits, and served on the Bureau for Refugees in Addis Ababa.
