Israel Signals Potential Pause In Gaza Conflict With New Ceasefire Plan
A senior Israeli official disclosed on Tuesday that the government insists on the release of all remaining hostages in any future Gaza agreement. The statement follows reports that Hamas has accepted a new truce proposal.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official reaffirmed Israel’s unchanged position on the issue. Meanwhile, two other officials told Reuters that Israel is reviewing Hamas’ response to the Gaza ceasefire proposal, which could see a 60-day truce and the release of half the Israeli hostages still held in the enclave.
Momentum for a pause in fighting has grown after Israel announced plans for a new offensive to seize Gaza City, with Egypt and Qatar actively encouraging indirect talks under a U.S.-backed ceasefire plan. The proposed deal reportedly includes the release of 200 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, along with an unspecified number of women and minors, in exchange for 10 living and 18 deceased Israeli hostages, according to Hamas and Egyptian security sources. Hamas is also seeking the release of hundreds of detainees from Gaza.
The proposal envisions a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces, which currently control roughly 75% of Gaza, and the delivery of increased humanitarian aid to the enclave, home to 2.2 million people facing worsening famine conditions. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Majed Al Ansari, stated that the 60-day truce could pave the way for a comprehensive agreement to end the conflict.
While Israel had previously agreed in principle to the outline, negotiations broke down over specific details, with the last round of talks stalling in late July. Displaced residents in Khan Younis expressed cautious optimism about whether the new proposal could lead to a lasting deal.
