Published

Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has praised residents of the state for overwhelmingly supporting the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Saturday’s by-elections, saying the outcome proves that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) holds no presence in Anambra while the Labour Party has lost relevance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Sunday at a victory celebration in Nanka, Soludo said the electorate delivered a clear message at the polls. “ADC does not exist in Anambra. We showed it yesterday. Labour Party is dead,” he declared to the cheers of APGA supporters.

According to election figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APGA candidates secured major wins. Emmanuel Nwachukwu won the Anambra South Senatorial District seat with 90,408 votes, defeating Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 19,847 votes, and ADC’s Donald Amangbo, who garnered 2,889 votes. Nwachukwu will replace the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away in July 2024.

In addition, INEC declared APGA’s Ifeoma Azikiwe winner of the Onitsha North Constituency 1 seat in the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Governor Soludo noted that several prominent Labour Party figures, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, mobilized support against APGA during the polls. He described the effort as an “allied force” that ultimately failed.

“Onitsha North is the constituency of the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party. He lives there, and they all came — senators, House of Representatives members — to test their strength. But the people of Anambra spoke decisively,” Soludo said.

The governor added that the opposition sought to use the by-election to gauge the popularity of the ADC in the state but were soundly defeated. “We won with about 77%, an emphatic statement that both ADC and Labour Party are dead in Anambra,” Soludo asserted.

According to him, the situation has heightened awareness among citizens, leading to increased political participation and a steady influx of new members into the party.

Abdullahi stated that the surge in registrations became noticeable after INEC’s decision affecting David Mark, noting that many Nigerians now have a clearer understanding of ongoing political developments.

The development comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, with factions led by Nafiu Bala and David Mark both laying claim to the party’s structure.

The dispute, which dates back to July 2025 following the emergence of an opposition coalition, has resulted in prolonged legal battles.

Citing a March 12 judgment of the Court of Appeal, INEC announced that it would not recognise either faction, a position conveyed in a statement by its National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Haruna.

The electoral body added that it would refrain from engaging with both groups, including participation in their meetings, congresses, or conventions, pending the outcome of a case before a Federal High Court.
