“Sky High Standoff Ends: Air Canada Flight Attendants Return To Work”
Air Canada announced it will resume flight operations on Sunday following an order from the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to end a strike by 10,000 flight attendants that had effectively grounded the airline and disrupted summer travel.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement, the airline confirmed that the CIRB “directed Air Canada to resume airline operations and for all Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants to return to duty by 2:00 p.m. EDT on August 17, 2025.”
The carrier warned that while flights would restart on Sunday evening, it could take several days for operations to return to normal, with some cancellations expected over the next seven to ten days.
The strike began early Saturday as cabin crew walked off the job over wage disputes. In response, Canada’s labor policy minister, Patty Hajdu, invoked a legal provision to halt the strike and push both sides into binding arbitration. “The directive, under section 107 of the Canada Labour Code, and the CIRB’s order, ends the strike at Air Canada that resulted in the suspension of more than 700 flights,” the Montreal-based airline stated.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), representing the workers, had sought higher wages and compensation for work performed during onboarding and other ground duties. CUPE had previously indicated that members would remain on strike until a government order mandated their return and had advised passengers against going to airports for Air Canada or Air Canada Rouge flights.
CUPE criticized the government intervention, calling it a reward for Air Canada’s unwillingness to negotiate and warning that it sets a “terrible precedent.” The union also highlighted a potential conflict of interest, noting that CIRB chairwoman Maryse Tremblay had previously served as legal counsel for the airline.
Earlier, Air Canada outlined pay proposals for cabin crew, projecting that a senior flight attendant would earn approximately CAN$87,000 ($65,000) by 2027, which CUPE described as “below inflation and below market value.”
Industry observers had warned that a strike at Air Canada could worsen economic pressures already impacted by US tariffs. The airline serves roughly 130,000 passengers daily and operates flights to 180 cities worldwide.
