According to Nivo News, here are the leading newspaper stories from across Nigeria for Saturday, August 16, 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has withdrawn recognition of Julius Abure as National Chairman of the Labour Party, citing the expiration of his tenure in June 2024 and the Supreme Court’s April 4, 2025 judgment that dismissed his leadership claims. In a sworn counter-affidavit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, INEC stated it cannot issue nomination upload codes to the Abure-led faction for today’s by-election, insisting there is no valid national chairman or secretary in place. The Commission also disowned the March 27, 2024 convention in Nnewi, saying it was neither monitored nor legally compliant.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied reports claiming that a Canadian court branded the party a terrorist organisation. National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka clarified that the case in question — involving an immigration appeal by Douglas Egharevba — had nothing to do with terrorism and never addressed APC’s status. Morka also pointed out that Egharevba’s claim of being an APC member since 2007 was false, as the party did not exist at that time.

In politics, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Dan Ulasi has said Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi would be a major advantage to the PDP in 2027, warning against any attempt to bring back former President Goodluck Jonathan. Ulasi argued that Jonathan’s return would give President Bola Tinubu an easy victory, while Obi’s candidacy could mark “the official end of the civil war” if the Southeast produces Nigeria’s next president.

Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has dismissed speculation about joining the APC to seek “forgiveness of sins.” Addressing supporters in Sokoto after questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged ₦189 billion cash withdrawals, Tambuwal said he cannot be intimidated or blackmailed, insisting no one can tarnish his record. He vowed never to defect to the APC.

Another PDP stalwart, Umar Sani, has claimed Peter Obi is politically aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) rather than the PDP, pointing to Obi’s directive for supporters to back an ADC candidate in a recent by-election. Sani described talk of Obi returning to the PDP as mere speculation, while noting efforts within the party to attract “capable hands.”

The House of Representatives has challenged Jigawa lawmaker Ibrahim Auyo to provide evidence for his claim that legislators pay between ₦1 million and ₦3 million to move motions or sponsor bills. The chamber warned Auyo will face its ethics committee if he fails to substantiate the allegation.

Ahead of by-elections in 13 states today, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has ordered restrictions on movement and barred VIP escorts in affected areas to ensure a peaceful process.

In Ogun State, four individuals arrested by the EFCC during a sting operation at a guest house within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex have been convicted of internet fraud. Justice D.I. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced the defendants — Bisiriyu Roqeeb Abiodun, Ibrahim Azeez Olatunji, Akinwale Isaac, and Habeeb Oladipupo Oshundairo — after they pleaded guilty to impersonation and related charges.

Veteran Nollywood actor Segun Remi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, has died at the age of 72. The celebrated Yoruba film star was widely known for his stagecraft, humour and commanding screen presence. His death was confirmed on Friday by movie producer Seun Oloketuyi.

On the sports front, National Sports Commission Director-General Bukola Olopade has assured the Super Falcons that the $100,000 reward promised by President Bola Tinubu for winning the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will be paid. Olopade said only “one or two” players are experiencing delays due to banking issues and confirmed that arrangements are underway to deliver the promised Abuja apartments to the squad.

FCT Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Demands.

Published

on

The State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in Abuja to commence an indefinite strike from Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The union also directed parents and guardians to keep their children at home until further notice, citing unresolved welfare concerns and what it described as government inaction.

This followed a communiqué issued after an emergency SWEC meeting held in Gwagwalada, Abuja, over the weekend and signed by the state leadership of the union.

Teachers were instructed to fully comply with the strike directive and await further instructions from the union leadership, as the industrial action remains in force until their demands are addressed.

According to the communiqué, the strike became necessary after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which elapsed without a satisfactory response.

The union recalled that although previous interventions led to the suspension of an earlier strike, several key issues affecting teachers’ welfare were still unresolved.

It also expressed concern that a committee set up to address outstanding entitlements submitted its report in August 2025, but the findings have not been made public or implemented.

While acknowledging the payment of the new minimum wage and some salary arrears, the union insisted that major concerns remain unattended.

The NUT further demanded reforms in promotion processes and a review of the 2024 promotion exercise.

After what it described as unsuccessful engagements and expired deadlines, the union declared that all teachers in the FCT will remain on strike indefinitely until their demands are met.
