Healthcare Boost: 50 Doctors, 100 Nurses Headed To Nigerian Prisons
Within the first two years of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, 50 medical doctors, 100 nurses, and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) doctors have been approved for deployment to correctional centres across the country. According to Nivo News, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, highlighting efforts to improve healthcare delivery and rehabilitate Nigeria’s ageing prison infrastructure.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Tunji-Ojo revealed that many custodial facilities were built over a century ago and had long operated without adequate medical personnel. He explained that until Tinubu’s intervention, some state commands did not have a single doctor assigned to their correctional centres.
The minister noted that at least 12 of Nigeria’s 246 custodial centres are currently undergoing rehabilitation, citing examples in Port Harcourt and Kuje where significant improvements have been made, including the successful conduct of major surgical procedures in recent weeks.
“Mr President did not become President 100 years ago. None of the 246 correctional centres were established under this administration,” Tunji-Ojo said. “The Ikoyi facility dates back to 1956, while the Suleja centre, which suffered a jailbreak, was established as far back as 1914. The government is doing its best to restore these facilities.”
He further explained that intelligence efforts are being intensified to strengthen prison security. “A lot is going on behind the scenes. You cannot expect the President to fix 246 locations, each with multiple structures, in just two years. But we are collaborating with other security agencies and making progress. We are not where we want to be, but we are not where we used to be,” he added.
