₦25 Billion Campus Safety Revolution: Streetlights, Surveillance Set For Nigerian Universities
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has earmarked ₦25 billion to strengthen security infrastructure across public tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Masari explained that the funds will be deployed for projects such as the installation of streetlights and other security-enhancing facilities to safeguard students, staff, and institutional assets. He stressed that the intervention aims to make campuses safer and more conducive to learning, with institutions expected to channel the resources into addressing security challenges through improved lighting and other related measures.
The former Katsina State governor also disclosed that TETFund has released over ₦100 billion to selected tertiary institutions to boost training capacity in medical sciences and address the shortage of healthcare professionals nationwide. Under this scheme, three institutions from each geopolitical zone have each received ₦4 billion to improve infrastructure and programmes in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and allied health disciplines.
According to Masari, these interventions were made possible by TETFund’s record revenue of ₦1.6 trillion in 2025, generated through the 3 per cent education tax on company profits. From this amount, ₦460 billion has been allocated to projects in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education; ₦225 billion has been disbursed to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to support the federal student loan programme; and ₦70 billion has been set aside for developing solar or gas-powered energy systems in institutions to ensure uninterrupted electricity for teaching and research.
Masari assured that a robust monitoring and evaluation framework is in place, with consultants engaged to guarantee that funds are used strictly for approved projects.
