Wike Throws in the Towel? FCT Minister Says Two Years Too Short for Turnaround
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said it would be unrealistic to expect his administration to overhaul every sector in Abuja within just two years.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Monday, Wike addressed growing concerns over infrastructure gaps, educational quality, healthcare deficiencies, and the chaotic transport system. He urged Nigerians to adopt a more pragmatic view of governance timelines and expectations.
“It’s simply not possible to transform everything in just two years,” the minister said frankly.
He criticized the tendency to prioritize the quantity of projects—especially universities—over their quality. “Everyone wants a university in their community, but no one asks about the standard or output of these institutions. It’s not just about having schools everywhere; what matters is the quality of education,” Wike remarked.
He explained that while many Nigerians demand physical infrastructure in their communities, there is often insufficient attention given to the standard and sustainability of such projects.
“I would prefer to have three well-equipped and functional universities than a dozen poorly run ones,” he said.
On healthcare, Wike noted that general hospitals across the FCT were currently being rehabilitated, but cautioned that it was unrealistic to expect fully equipped hospitals in every district within such a short timeframe.
“Why would anyone expect that within two years, there’ll be a general hospital in every area? That’s not how things work,” he stated.
Addressing the state of public transportation in the FCT, Wike acknowledged the system was in disarray but insisted that efforts were underway to fix it.
“Yes, the transport system is chaotic. But we’ve already begun taking steps to bring order. It’s unfair to assume we can resolve decades of neglect overnight,” he said.
According to Wike, meaningful governance requires a strategic roadmap and phased implementation. “Every responsible government must plan in phases. From this period to that, you tackle this sector. Then move on to the next. That’s how government should function,” he explained.
When asked why his mandate secretaries are rarely seen addressing the public or responding to public concerns, Wike pushed back, saying the media has no authority to dictate how he manages public communication.
“So you’re not satisfied with my briefings? That’s not your call. You can go to them yourself and ask questions. You don’t get to advise us on our media approach,” he responded.
Wike also dismissed suggestions that he wasn’t effectively supervising his secretaries.
“That’s unfair. You know me—I approve funds, I monitor projects. Asking if I supervise them is insulting. Do I look like someone who just sits in the office?” he asked rhetorically.
On education, the minister disclosed that several completed and rehabilitated school projects across the FCT would soon be commissioned. However, he noted that he does not hold elaborate ceremonies for school projects as he does for road infrastructure, which he believes garner more public visibility.
“We’re making progress in education, but I don’t believe we need elaborate flag-offs for schools. The work will speak for itself,” Wike added.
