In a resurfaced video clip from a social media interview, the British politician recounted her time at the federal boarding school, where she had to cut grass with a machete and clean toilets without running water.
“I attended a federal government girls’ school in a place called Sagamu,” she said. “It felt like being in prison. I had to use a machete to cut grass and fetch buckets of water just to get by. That was my first time away from home and family.”
Badenoch explained that the school had a large dormitory system housing around 150 girls, with up to 30 students crammed into each room. “It was like Lord of the Flies—the students were basically in control,” she added.
She described the institution as part of a fading grammar school model under a socialist-style system that aimed to distribute students across federal schools to ensure regional balance in academic performance. “They didn’t want one school getting all the best students, so people were often posted far from home,” she said. “I was fortunate not to be sent too far, but I still felt very isolated.”
Recalling the harsh conditions, Badenoch said, “We were responsible for maintaining the school grounds. Cleaning toilets without running water… I won’t even go into the details.”
