Fresh Violence Rocks Akwa Ibom as Armed Groups Clash—12 Injured, Homes Torched
At least 12 people have been hospitalised and numerous homes set ablaze following a renewed wave of violence in Inua Eyet Ikot, a community in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The attack, allegedly carried out by assailants from neighbouring Eket LGA, occurred in the early hours of Friday last week, around 1:30 a.m.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The two LGAs—Eket and Ibeno—have long been embroiled in a bitter land dispute over ownership of the Stubbs Creek Forest Reserve, a conflict that has claimed multiple lives and caused destruction of property worth millions of naira over the years.
Eyewitnesses said the most recent incident left several residents of Ibeno severely wounded. Among the victims was Mr. Daniel Asuquo, popularly known as “Dan Baba,” who was caught in the crossfire while attempting to flee. He was found in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds and was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility.
One witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “We heard sporadic gunshots around 1:30 a.m. and quickly alerted the police. Although the attackers fled before security forces arrived, a search operation led to the discovery of Mr. Dan Baba, who had been shot. Several homes, including his, were vandalised and torched, resulting in losses running into millions.”
Another member of the local vigilante group lamented that this was the fifth attack on Ibeno by groups from Eket and Esit Eket LGAs in recent times. He linked the renewed hostilities to boundary re-mapping efforts initiated under former Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration.
“Ibeno hosts major oil installations and multinational companies. These attacks are not random—they are tied to land disputes fueled by the re-adjustment of boundaries,” he said.
A displaced resident now taking refuge in Eastern Obolo LGA added: “This latest assault heightens security concerns in Ibeno, which contributes 80 percent of Akwa Ibom’s oil revenues. The state and federal governments must act before this turns into something worse.”
He described the attacks as part of a persistent, unresolved conflict between Ibeno and Eket communities, warning of further escalation if immediate action isn’t taken.
Local leaders and community stakeholders have strongly condemned the repeated invasions and called on Governor Umo Eno, security agencies, and emergency management authorities—both state and federal—to intervene decisively.
Confirming the incident, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, said investigations are ongoing and that law enforcement is working to apprehend those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.
