BVAS Sabotage in Osun Election Will Trigger Severe Penalties – INEC Sounds Alarm

Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mutiu Agboke, gave the warning while speaking to journalists in Ibadan shortly after appearing on the political programme Gbagede Oselu, aired by the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) on Sunday.
Agboke stressed that INEC has established clear operational guidelines for its equipment, particularly the BVAS, and any official who deviates from these standards is violating the Commission’s protocols.
“INEC has defined rules governing how our machines should operate. Any staff member who offers excuses that contradict these regulations is acting against our processes. If anyone witnesses such behavior, they should not resort to confrontation but instead alert security personnel,” Agboke said.
He explained that a fully charged BVAS device should function optimally, and any failure to do so, especially if deliberate sabotage is suspected, points to electoral malpractice. “If an INEC official, including ad hoc staff, deliberately disables the BVAS or collaborates with others to undermine its function, that is a serious breach and must be reported immediately to security agencies,” he warned.
Agboke also attributed past cases of electoral fraud to the failure of various stakeholders to fulfill their roles. He called for collective action to tackle the recurring issues of vote-buying and electoral violence, which continue to undermine the country’s democratic process.
He criticised the roles played by the media, political actors, security agencies, civil society organisations, and religious leaders, especially during the build-up to elections and on election day itself, lamenting the escalation of violence and voter intimidation.
“It’s time for all stakeholders to wake up and take responsibility for the growth of our democracy,” Agboke declared. “At INEC, we are resolute in our stand against the scourge of vote-buying and voter manipulation.”
He noted that aside from financial inducement, many politicians now resort to violence as a means of gaining electoral advantage. “The only way to combat this is through continuous stakeholder engagement and awareness campaigns to discourage such practices,” he said.
Agboke also urged stakeholders to intensify public enlightenment efforts around the electoral process. “We must consistently educate our people to believe in the democratic system. Democracy remains the best form of government for the masses globally, and elections are the only legitimate path to democratic leadership,” he noted.
He concluded by emphasising that INEC alone cannot solve the challenges plaguing Nigeria’s elections. “The media, civil society, and political class must all work together to change the narrative. We must speak to the conscience of the electorate—let them know that their votes are not for sale,” he said.
