Big Moves! PDP Rolls Out Convention Timetable to Reshape Party Leadership

The timetable, signed by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, was released on Sunday in Abuja.
According to the schedule, the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms will run from September 3 to September 22, while the deadline for submission of completed forms is September 26. Screening of all aspirants is set for September 30, with the publication of cleared candidates slated for October 3, and screening appeals to follow on October 6.
The final list of qualified aspirants will be published on October 10, paving the way for the convention. The party also noted that the handover process will take place between December 1 and 8, 2025.
SDP Sues INEC Over Exclusion of Candidates, Amid Leadership Crisis
Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has taken legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for allegedly refusing to recognize its candidates for upcoming by-elections in 12 states.
In a statement issued Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, described INEC’s stance as an overreach, maintaining that all SDP candidates emerged from validly conducted primaries.
“The SDP is already challenging INEC’s decision in court. We believe the judiciary will compel the Commission to accept our candidates, who were nominated in line with our constitution, the Electoral Act, and INEC guidelines,” Aiyenigba stated.
He further argued that INEC’s move, which also affected Labour Party candidates over purported internal disputes, violates a Supreme Court ruling that affirms the autonomy of political parties in choosing their flagbearers.
“The Commission lacks constitutional authority to determine or interfere in a party’s nomination process,” he added.
This legal battle comes amid an escalating leadership tussle within the SDP. On July 25, 2025, a new NWC, led by Adamu Modibo, emerged following an emergency NEC meeting attended by 23 state chairmen, including the FCT representative. Modibo, now the Acting National Chairman, pledged to reunite the party and establish a new disciplinary and reconciliation committee.
However, the faction led by Dr. Sadiq Abubakar rejected the NEC meeting, branding it unconstitutional. The party’s National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, aligned with the Abubakar faction, described the gathering as “illegal and irregular,” warning state officials against violating the SDP constitution.
The deepening crisis has sparked multiple suspensions. On June 24, 2025, the Gabam-led NWC suspended former National Chairman Shehu Gabam, National Auditor Nze Nnadi Clarkson, and National Youth Leader Uchechukwu Chukwuma over alleged financial impropriety and unauthorised transactions.
In a dramatic twist last week, the party also expelled former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai for 30 years, accusing him of falsely claiming SDP membership while allegedly promoting another political party in Kaduna.
