Shame of the Streets: LASTMA Cracks Whip on 18 Officers Over Abuse of Office
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has disciplined 18 officers for various infractions and impounded over 7,000 vehicles through physical enforcement within the first half of 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos, the vehicles were seized for a range of traffic violations.
In addition to the physical clampdowns, Bakare-Oki revealed that more than 54,000 vehicles were captured using the Traffic Management Solutions (TMS) technology, an innovation introduced under his leadership.
He further stated that over 1,000 vehicles were towed off the roads, while the authority recorded over 700 road traffic accidents during the same period. He credited the technological approach to enforcement for significantly boosting the agency’s performance.
To enhance operational efficiency, Bakare-Oki said LASTMA has prioritised the training and re-orientation of its personnel since January 2025. The year-long programme includes both internal and external training sessions. Internally, officers are pulled off the field weekly for training, which is conducted by senior agency officials and seasoned professionals from the Lagos State public service.
Topics covered during training include emotional intelligence, non-aggressive enforcement strategies, mental health awareness, and the importance of healthcare. Officers are also receiving instruction in advanced traffic management techniques to align with the agency’s future direction.
On the punitive measures taken against the 18 officers, Bakare-Oki explained that the disciplinary process strictly adhered to the Lagos State Public Service Rules. Sanctions varied from dismissal and demotion to official warnings, depending on the severity of each offence.
The LASTMA boss also highlighted new initiatives aimed at improving public compliance with traffic laws. These include monthly public sensitisation campaigns, the introduction of the Female Elite Corps, and the launch of the LASTMA Mayor programme.
“Traffic management is a collective responsibility,” Bakare-Oki stressed. “LASTMA is ramping up its efforts, but we urge Lagosians to play their part by obeying traffic rules and regulations.”
