Outrage Grows: Dadiyata’s Family, Amnesty Accuse FG of Cover-Up After Six Years of Disappearance
The family of Abubakar Idris, widely known as Dadiyata, alongside Amnesty International, has renewed demands for justice, marking six years since the university lecturer and vocal government critic was abducted from his home in Kaduna.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Dadiyata was forcefully taken by unidentified individuals on August 2, 2019, shortly after arriving home from work. Since that day, he has not been seen, and his vehicle also remains unaccounted for.
At a press conference hosted by Amnesty International in Kaduna on Saturday, his elder brother, Usman Idris, described the family’s ordeal as “an endless nightmare,” expressing frustration over the continued silence of authorities regarding his brother’s disappearance.
“That night is etched in our memories. This has been six years of anguish, unanswered questions, and emotional and financial hardship,” he said. “Abubakar was neither a criminal nor a terrorist. He was a lecturer, a husband, a father — a citizen who used his voice, not violence, to promote reform and speak truth to power.”
Usman revealed that the family has reached out to numerous authorities, including the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the Department of State Services, and the Attorney General of the Federation, but has received no official response.
“Our father’s health has deteriorated. Our mother passed away without closure. She died still hoping her son would return. An uncle also died, weighed down by grief. This silence has cost us everything,” he said.
“Six years is too long to wait. Too long to grieve. Too long for justice to hide in silence. We keep asking: Where is Abubakar Idris Dadiyata? Is he alive? Will he ever return home?”
He described Dadiyata as “a voice for the voiceless” and “one of the brightest minds from the North,” whose disappearance has left lasting emotional scars on the family.
His wife, Khadija Lame, was overwhelmed with emotion as she spoke of their children’s pain and confusion. “They ask me every day, ‘Where is Daddy?’ And I have no answers. We have lived six years in limbo — six years without peace, without closure.”
Amnesty International’s Country Director, Isa Sanusi, condemned the Federal Government’s handling of the case, describing its attitude as “a deafening silence and shameful inaction.”
