More Power for Women! Lawmaker Pushes Bold Move to Reserve More Seats for Females in Constitution Review

The lawmaker representing Ona-Ara and Egbeda Federal Constituency, Hon. Akin Alabi, who also chairs the House Committee on Works, has voiced strong support for increased women’s participation in Nigerian politics.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking at an event in Ibadan on Saturday, Alabi decried the low representation of women in the National Assembly and other leadership positions. He emphasized the need for constitutional reform to correct the imbalance.

“If you look at the House of Representatives and the Senate, the number of women is abysmally low. We must first acknowledge this as a serious issue,” Alabi told reporters at the event themed “Seeds of Change: Women, Agriculture and the Politics of Progress”, convened by Farmer Omolara K. Svensson, President of Nigerian Women for Agricultural Development.

Alabi expressed support for an ongoing constitutional amendment currently at the public hearing stage, which proposes the creation of additional seats exclusively for women—one per state in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

“That would mean an additional 36 women in each chamber. I’m fully prepared to support this proposal when it reaches the Third Reading for voting on the floor of the House,” he said, adding that increasing women’s presence on the ballot would offer voters more opportunities to elect qualified female leaders.

The convener, Farmer Svensson, explained that the event aimed to encourage women to actively engage in politics, especially given the policy-driven challenges facing the agricultural sector.

“I used to think politics wasn’t my business as a farmer, but the more I advanced in agricpreneurship, the more I realized that most of our problems stem from poor policymaking,” she said.

Svensson highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of food insecurity as a national emergency, commending the move as bold and necessary. She argued that empowering women through agriculture was not only a survival strategy but also a pathway to political inclusion.

“We expected about 100 participants, but today we have almost 300. This is just the beginning. We’re starting in Oyo State, but this will grow into a national movement, by God’s grace,” she added.

Also speaking at the event, former Oyo State Head of Service, Mrs. Hannah Ogunesan, MFR, urged women to assert their rights and seize equal opportunities for political leadership.

Key aspects of the petition include:

  • Allegations of False Representation: The petition challenges a November 3, 2025, letter sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which falsely claimed that the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had replaced acting national chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum with Mohammed.

  • Contradictory NWC Records: Petitioners assert that the NWC’s November 1, 2025, emergency meeting actually resulted in the suspension of Anyanwu and three other officers due to alleged anti-party activities, and no record exists to support the claim that Damagum was suspended or Mohammed appointed.

  • Legal Precedents: The lawyers referenced an October 10, 2024, Federal High Court judgment that recognizes Damagum as the acting national chairman and prohibits INEC from accepting documents without his signature. Furthermore, they noted that the Court of Appeal upheld the NWC’s suspension of Anyanwu on March 9, 2026.

  • Call for Institutional Review: The petitioners have requested that the IGP investigate how INEC processed the contested November 3 letter despite being aware of the existing court orders and the NWC’s official resolutions.

  • Stated Objective: Counsel for the petitioner emphasized that the action is intended to address the integrity of public institutions and prevent the use of misleading internal party documentation, noting their readiness to provide supporting court judgments and party records to the police.
