The military also dismissed as false and malicious recent allegations circulating online that civilian properties were demolished during the operation. Describing the claims as a smear campaign, the Army clarified that no such demolition took place.
Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations at the Infantry Corps Centre, Captain Olusegun Abidoye, made this known during a press briefing and guided tour of the area on Saturday. He spoke on behalf of the cantonment.
Abidoye expressed concern over the growing prevalence of drug-related social vices in the vicinity of the military installation, particularly in communities such as Railway Settlement, Unguwan Loya, Unguwan Aboki, Unguwan Alhaji, and Unguwan Alasan. While these settlements provide informal services to the cantonment, they also pose serious security and social risks, he said.
“Some of these settlements are situated within zones designated for military training, exposing both civilians and personnel to significant danger, especially during live-fire drills,” Abidoye stated.
According to him, internal intelligence and surveillance revealed the presence of well-organised drug networks within these communities. The cartels, reportedly run by more than 15 individuals, were involved in the trafficking, sale, and distribution of illegal substances both within and outside the cantonment.
Substances seized and commonly trafficked by the syndicates include cannabis (Indian hemp), skunk, Exol, crystal meth (ice), crack cocaine, tramadol, and other psychotropic drugs.
He further revealed that the crackdown on these networks is part of broader efforts to combat substance abuse, particularly among soldiers’ children and local youth, and to reinforce security around the military base.
On allegations of property demolition, Captain Abidoye clarified that the disputed land in question is under litigation and that the cantonment has adhered strictly to a court order mandating all parties to maintain the status quo.
“Contrary to online reports, it was the plaintiffs who violated the court order by erecting structures and allowing a construction firm to excavate laterite from the contested land,” he explained.
In response, the cantonment filed for an interlocutory injunction to restrain further encroachment until the case is concluded in court.
He also noted that some businesses previously situated within sensitive zones had been relocated to a designated market space to improve monitoring and enhance security.
Regarding reports that electricity was disconnected in certain communities, the Army spokesman emphasized that the military had no role in such actions.
The Jaji Military Cantonment, widely regarded as a key hub of the Nigerian Armed Forces, houses several elite institutions including the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Infantry Corps Centre Headquarters, Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre, Warrant Officers’ Academy, Nigerian Army School of Infantry, 4 Demonstration Battalion, and the 601 Aviation Battalion.
