In a strongly-worded statement released on Sunday, the Nigerian international—who played a decisive role in Atalanta’s historic UEFA Europa League title last season—expressed deep frustration with the club’s leadership, saying he has been left with no option but to seek a move after months of unmet assurances.

Reflecting on his time with the Italian side since joining in 2022, the 26-year-old winger recounted the passion and dedication with which he served the club and the city of Bergamo.

“Over the past three years at Atalanta, I’ve given absolutely everything. Not just as a footballer, but as a person,” he stated.
“I’ve always worn the shirt with pride and tried to represent this club and the city of Bergamo with heart, passion and dedication.”

Lookman also highlighted Atalanta’s Europa League triumph in Dublin as one of the defining moments of his career.

“It still gives me goosebumps thinking about it,” he said.

Despite his emotional attachment to the club and its fans, Lookman made it clear that he believes it is time for a new challenge.

“After three wonderful years in Bergamo, it is the right time to move on and experience a new adventure,” he declared.

He further revealed that the club had previously assured him that he would be allowed to leave if a suitable offer was received. However, he now claims that Atalanta is going back on that promise.

“Despite now receiving an offer in alignment with what I believe had been discussed, sadly the club is blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand.”

In the most searing part of his statement, Lookman alleged a pattern of broken commitments and mistreatment by the club.

“After many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment towards me as both a human being and as a professional footballer, sadly I feel I have no choice but to speak out for what I believe is right,” he said.
“I can confirm I have now handed in a formal transfer request.”

The Nigerian forward, who famously netted a hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, noted that he had remained silent through difficult times, hoping for resolution.

“Even throughout the extremely difficult moments I’ve endured… I have always tried to put the club, the fans and the team first and hoped it would not get to this.”

The support you have always given me has been incredible and the bond we have created together is special.”

Lookman disclosed that although other clubs had previously shown interest, he stayed loyal to Atalanta in the hope of building something meaningful. However, he insists that this time there was a mutual understanding that a fair offer would trigger his release—an agreement he now says is being dishonoured.
