From Disaster to Defense: Jigawa Launches Massive Infrastructure to Crush Flood Threat
The Jigawa State Government has announced the construction of a 132-kilometre embankment and 32 drainage systems as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate flooding and protect vulnerable communities across the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Governor Umar Namadi made the disclosure in Dutse during the launch of the 2025 Tree Planting Campaign. He noted that embankments were strategically built along the Hadejia River to curb flooding, safeguard farmlands, and build resilience among flood-prone communities.
The governor also revealed that construction work is ongoing at 32 locations across the state to install new drainage systems aimed at reclaiming eroded and waterlogged areas.
In addition, the state has deployed two amphibious hydraulic excavators to dredge the Hadejia River and clear blocked waterways caused by invasive typha grass. This initiative, coordinated by a technical committee, targets over 159 kilometres of channel clearance to improve water flow and reduce the risk of recurring floods.
“These measures are part of our broader strategy to protect the environment and improve the socioeconomic well-being of our people,” Namadi said. “Flooding has caused significant damage to lives and property over the years, and we are determined to reverse that trend.”
To encourage community participation, the state government is also distributing manual tools and materials to support grassroots-level flood mitigation efforts.
Chairman of the Jigawa Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC), Abdullahi Sa’id, affirmed that the state has allocated substantial funding to enhance its flood response mechanisms across 21 local government areas projected to experience flooding during the current rainy season.
In support of these efforts, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has intensified its flood awareness campaigns in collaboration with the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) under the 2025 National Preparedness and Response Campaign on Flood and Related Hazards.
Nura Abdullahi, Head of NEMA’s Kano Territorial Office, stated that early warning systems have been scaled up with the deployment of personnel and volunteers to flood-prone communities. These efforts, he said, focus on community-based information sharing and local security surveillance to improve response times and preparedness.
Abdullahi cited the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Annual Flood Outlook from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, both of which forecast flooding in 21 out of Jigawa’s 27 local government areas.
In a related development, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Jigawa, through its Director Ahmad Tijjani, said sensitisation campaigns have been conducted in five high-risk communities. The goal is to educate residents on practical steps to mitigate the impact of flooding and promote long-term disaster resilience.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
