From Despair to Hope: NHIA-Roche Cost-Sharing Deal Sparks Joy Among Cancer Patients
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), in collaboration with Roche Pharmaceuticals and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has launched a cost-sharing programme aimed at reducing financial barriers for cancer patients seeking oncology care.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The initiative is designed to enhance access to life-saving cancer treatment, improve clinical outcomes, and protect patients from the crippling costs often associated with cancer management in Nigeria.
Speaking during the official presentation of the initiative on Friday in Abuja, Ms. Linda Makwe from the NHIA’s Department of Standards and Quality Assurance said the programme seeks to expand access to high-cost oncology medications, particularly for vulnerable populations. She noted that the initiative underscores NHIA’s strategic role in healthcare financing and procurement.
“This partnership ensures that patients can access critical cancer drugs at subsidised rates, with the financial burden shared among NHIA, Roche, and the patient,” Makwe stated.
Under the arrangement, Roche will cover 50% of the cost of monoclonal antibody medicines and provide logistical support to ensure steady availability. NHIA will manage patient enrolment and coordinate the financing framework. The overall goal, Makwe added, is to reduce out-of-pocket expenses and support Nigeria’s drive toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Also speaking at the event, Mr. Funsho David, Team Lead for Oncology at Roche, emphasised the company’s commitment to making cancer care more affordable and accessible for Nigerians. He explained that the cost-sharing model enables patients to access not only medications but also other essential treatment services, without suffering financial hardship.
“This model guarantees access to essential oncology therapies while shielding patients from catastrophic healthcare costs,” David said.
He praised FMC Abuja for its partnership and urged the facility to increase its NHIA service offerings from six to over 20 in order to deliver comprehensive cancer care, from diagnosis through to surgery, chemotherapy, and rehabilitation.
In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of FMC Abuja, Prof. Saad Ahmed—represented by the Director of Clinical Services, Dr. Muftau Bioku—welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would ease the heavy financial burden faced by many cancer patients.
The partnership builds on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in November 2021 between NHIA and Roche Products Ltd. That agreement was aimed at expanding access to innovative cancer treatments and advancing the nation’s UHC agenda.
Following a successful two-year pilot phase, a renewed agreement was signed in 2025 to scale up the initiative. The expanded framework includes comprehensive treatment coverage, services for uninsured patients, patient navigation and counselling, as well as immunohistochemistry testing for eligible cases.
The collaboration is expected to provide lasting impact by making cancer care more affordable, improving patient outcomes, and offering financial protection to thousands of Nigerians.
