Enough Is Enough! Petrol Dealers Accuse NNPC of Sabotage, Demand Refinery Privatization

Published

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has urged President Bola Tinubu to consider the privatization of the Port Harcourt Refinery, citing inefficiencies and systemic failures under the current management by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Joseph Obele, PETROAN lamented the persistent corruption, favoritism, and operational inefficiency that have plagued the nation’s refineries for years. The association warned that retaining NNPC’s control over the Port Harcourt facility—while plans are reportedly underway to sell off the Warri and Kaduna refineries—would be counterproductive.

“This isn’t good news,” Obele stated. “The idea of selling Warri and Kaduna refineries while leaving Port Harcourt under NNPC’s management is worrisome, especially considering NNPC’s track record riddled with favoritism and corruption.”

He argued that NNPC’s mismanagement has resulted in chronic fuel shortages, inflated prices, and worsening economic hardship. According to PETROAN, privatization would introduce greater accountability, global competitiveness, foreign investment, and higher government revenues.

Obele further asserted that privatizing the Port Harcourt refinery could unlock benefits such as enhanced productivity, technical expertise, job creation, and improved fuel supply to consumers. He added that any credible private investor would receive full support from host communities, noting that private operators tend to be more transparent and responsive to local stakeholders.

This call comes in the wake of an announcement by NNPC Ltd’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, during a recent town hall meeting at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, where he ruled out the sale of the Port Harcourt Refining Company, effectively ending weeks of public speculation about the asset’s future.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
