TETFund Breaks New Ground, Injects International Funds into Campus Infrastructure

The Chairman of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and former Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Masari, has revealed that funds initially designated for suspended foreign training programmes are now being redirected toward critical infrastructure interventions in Nigerian universities.

TETFund had earlier announced a temporary halt to its overseas training initiatives due to the escalating foreign exchange rates.

Speaking on Tuesday during the commissioning of five major projects at the Ikot Akpaden and Obio Akpa campuses of Akwa Ibom State University, Masari commended the university’s management for prudently utilising TETFund’s infrastructure grants.

He stated:

“The projects we are commissioning today are five in total, valued at N7,306,029,318.52 (Seven billion, three hundred and six million, twenty-nine thousand, three hundred and eighteen naira, fifty-two kobo).”

Masari noted that rising exchange rates, the high cost of overseas training, and incidents of scholars absconding during foreign programmes had compelled TETFund to suspend such initiatives.

“In response, we are channeling resources into high-impact special interventions, which we believe will deliver tangible benefits in the near future,” he said.

Expressing confidence in the university’s continued growth, Masari added:

“With the sustained and responsible use of these funds, I am optimistic that Akwa Ibom State University will keep rising as a hub of academic excellence and research—both within the region and beyond.”

He disclosed that the university had received over ₦14.4 billion in TETFund support over the past 15 years. Of this amount, he said a significant portion had already been accessed, leaving about ₦2.67 billion yet to be drawn, pending the completion of ongoing projects.

“From 2010 to 2025, Akwa Ibom State University has consistently benefited from TETFund interventions. During this period, it has received a total of ₦14,476,013,835.31 (Fourteen billion, four hundred and seventy-six million, thirteen thousand, eight hundred and thirty-five naira, thirty-one kobo), specifically for infrastructure-related projects under the Annual, Special, Zonal, and Special High-Impact intervention categories,” Masari explained.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
