It’s About Power, Not Fairness” – Odinkalu Accuses Tinubu of Ethnic Agenda at INEC
As the tenure of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, approaches its end, anxiety is building over Nigeria’s capacity to ensure a credible and inclusive process in selecting his successor.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Appointed in 2015 by former President Muhammadu Buhari and reappointed in 2020, Yakubu is expected to complete his second five-year term in October 2025. Over his decade-long leadership, he supervised two general elections—in 2019 and 2023.
While some analysts foresee a seamless transition, others express concern, questioning the transparency and objectivity of the anticipated appointment.
One of the key debates centres around which geopolitical zone should produce the next INEC chairman. Lobbying has intensified from various quarters, with advocates emerging for the North-Central, South-South, and South-East zones.
Under the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the President is empowered to nominate a new INEC chairman, with the nominee subject to Senate confirmation. Given the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s dominance in the upper chamber, many believe any nominee presented by President Bola Tinubu will face little resistance.
In an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, Alex Ogbonna, immediate past National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo (Worldwide), downplayed expectations of a transparent, merit-based selection process.
“Our President is Jagaban in every sense,” Ogbonna remarked. “To Jagaban, geopolitical balancing is secondary. What matters is trust and loyalty based on his own metrics. And with the APC commanding a majority in the Senate, his nominee will be cleared.”
He added, “The Nigerian version of democracy is quite peculiar. Since the Second Republic under Alhaji Shehu Shagari, presidents have appointed electoral umpires. Yet, the public is somehow expected to believe that these appointees will remain neutral in contests involving those who empowered them. That’s one of the enduring contradictions of our democracy.”
